There were a lot of families fishing and BBQ on the day we visited. There was plenty of parking. The fishing must have been good because I think we were the only ones without fishing rods. We only found one marked trail, but it is rather a large area so there were probably more.
There is a nice covered bridge, a nice place to sit and relax by the river. There is a lot of good fishing places as well.
Its a good place to bring a picnic basket for lunch, bring a fishing pole and go sit by the dam, They do have charcoal grills available on site, but no trash cans. They have a large pavilion with tables, rest rooms are scary...
Lovely trails, spots to throw some fishing line in, Comstock Bridge is amazing. A must see. Has it all.
Sometimes I go to do some light off-roading. Sometimes I fly a kite. Barbecue. Hike. Run my dog. Swim. Fish. It's right down the street from me, and I love it.
A river runs through Colchester, CT, and it's supposedly one of the cleanest in the country. Let's keep it that way. If a sign says "no vehicles," don't drive down it. If there are no trash cans, that means you carry out your garbage.
Recently, on my favorite rock, someone named "Rachel" took her favorite color spray paint and tagged her name and an infinity sign. Let's find her and decorate her car, her home, her backyard.
This place is beautiful. There are some great views while hiking. There is a large field for sports, a wonderful picnic area with grills, and a natural-fed spring with potable water. My family and I love it, including the dog. I probably shouldn't be writing this review because I want to keep it for myself. Perhaps more exposure will help me find Rachel. She, and others who have left trash, are the only reason this state park does not have 5 stars.
I just visited this park a day or two ago.
I'd never been and was quite surprised by the possibilities here for quiet times and fishing as well.
When you first enter the park --the land is rather flat. This would be great for those that need flat lands for walking or hiking. Very large expanse ..acres......and some areas featuring cut grasses.
Several Picnic tables and a fresh water spout in this area near the entrance of this State Park .
You can also cross the road and visit the Covered Bridge area where the Fly Fishing is done.
The river runs thru this place and the park road shadows the rivers path. However --the road is at the high point and the river is at the valley level as you proceed up the road and away from the entrance.
I wasn't prepared to fish on this day ---so the hike was what it was all about for me. I brought my light back pack and hiking sticks and they were so needed. The pathway from the parking area down to the river is quite a angle. The sticks helped you lean back on the way down....and helped you climb up on the return. it almost seems like your walking straight up on a 90 degree angle. Difficult to say the least.....made so much better with my hiking sticks.
Down by the river is quite worth the hill. The sun shines...the river babbles and would be quite the spot for trout. The river expanse is full of rocks and trees standing or bending into the river.Just like a picture !!
You can make fire in fire circles already set up---so if you catch something and you have time --you can eat your lunch fresh right there.
Very little interaction with others around the river at this point which is well up the park road road..I'd say at least 3/4 a mile. Saw only one other person and her dog at the river hiking along . So perfect for quiet times just sitting back and enjoying the natural world.
I found a great place to sit on some moss covered knolls...but you may want to pack in a small camping stool to be comfortable for the day.
I was also glad I wore my hat...because as your traversing the forest hill to the river--your in a heavy canopy--- bringing on the gnats and flies and mosquitos. I could wave them from my face...and the hat prevented their landing on
me around my head area--so I was able to go thru this trip without using my bug spray at all.
This area has no bathrooms --so be sure to bring a spade to dig a toilet hole if you need to. Across the street does have a bathroom facility---as your in a more busier area over their...Not in the Forest as this side is.
Though the hill to the river was a little daunting---I will be returning to this place. I just found it so tranquil and unspoiled.
Of course if you'd rather be around more people and not so isolated---stay down by the entrance and the meadow...there is something for everyone here.
