The road sign was all it took for us to make a slight detour from Gillette Castle to see the schoolhouse and salute a patriot. The quiet hilltop location, high above the Connecticut River also speaks of the famous Charter Oak tree that still stands on this site.
It looks like not much from the road, you go up a winding drive sort of behind a little church and park near a portapotty but what a fabulous view from their park like setting. We go at least once a summer and I think it's only open on weekends. It's a lovely setting and we've never seen more than a handful of people there at the same time we were there. The school house is interesting, exhibits nicely done. There is always a friendly docent there to explain anything and the kids always love writing something using the quill pen and ink. Did it mention the fantastic view of the river? It almost feels like a private park. You can tour the school house in about 10 minutes, 15 if you read all the exhibits but then the real beauty of this place is to go and sit outside under a shade tree and read a good book while munching on an apple. A perfect afternoon.
