“Fantastic”
Reviewed April 19, 2013 for a stay in April 2013

We loved our week at Barclayfield. An absolutely amazing location, and a great retreat! The house was beautiful, with all mod cons (fantastic expresso maker, DVD collection, stereo system, amazing shower, electric blankets, binoculars for birdwatching) and the owner was very considerate and understanding.

The road up is a bit daunting by the owner talked us through it and guided us up the road the first time.

All in all we had a fantastic, peaceful week. We'll definitely be back!

“Never again”

We could feel the front wheels lose traction as the rear end of the car began to fishtail as we tried to climb the wet, very steep incline. On one side of us was the rock face of the hill, and on the other a deep ravine. We somehow made it to the house but vowed never to have to try and climb that mile long road ever again; we’d tried it twice.

There were deep muddy ruts where you could feel the car slide sideways as you tried to negotiate them, the grass on the centre of the track brushing the underneath of the car like a wire brush.

The wheels slid as you climbed, but going down was just as bad if not worse as you could feel the wheels lock even with gentle braking, but the gradient and poor surface was such that the car just kept moving at times. You were violently rocked by the numerous potholes aware that a couple of feet to one side of the narrow track was the sharp drop into the ravine below.

There are no passing places so you really didn’t want to think what you would do if you met a vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

The track also becomes the route for all the water coming off the hill when it’s wet, and in Scotland that’s quite often

The house itself carries a ‘no shoes’ policy. This in itself wouldn’t have been a problem had we been told beforehand so we could have brought some suitable slippers, but stocking feet left me cold on the wooden floors, and unsteady on the bare wood steps of the stairs

The barn conversion is directly adjacent to another property (almost touching) but despite the elevated location at the top of a hill there are no picturesque views from any of the living area window over the nearby countryside.

The three bedrooms are downstairs. Two (the doubles) have small windows, which overlooked an overgrown grass bank a couple of feet away. It was wet when we stayed but even with the blinds drawn up the bedrooms had an underground feel to them.

The house contains nothing by the way of any nick knack or homely furnishing such as a painting/drawing/photos. The white walls are a blank canvass apart from some electrical plates/wires in the bedrooms that we assumed were there for future flat screen TV’s?

The central heating wasn’t working so instead we were left some small electric fires. Not ideal, and hardly comforting. No attempt was made to repair the heating whilst we were there.

In the kitchen there was a coffee pod type machine for which there was an honesty box with a suggested 30p per shot! Please, take it away or make it part of the rental.

No matter what we thought of the house the state/geography of the track marred any feelings we might have had to stay there

The visitor book contained an entry describing how one family got stuck, I dread to think what it’s like in snow or ice, we had more than enough problems staying there in the summer.

Would we go back, no, not even if it was free including the coffee! The most disappointing holiday let we’ve ever stayed in by a very, very long margin.

“Tranquil, private, modern and spotlessly clean”

The property is actually called Barclayfield, outside the village of Aberargie, Perth and Kinross. Well done if you've found it online and on Trip Advisor. We stayed here for one week in July- 4 adults and one wee boy aged 1. The journey up from the main road takes about 10 minutes- it’s really exciting or a bit stressful depending on how you like driving on an unsurfaced track. We thought we were enroute to some lost city- but very glad we had an ordinary hatchback- if you have a sports car with a low front spoiler, then you will struggle. This is not a journey to be hurried!
Once you’re up, it’s definitely worth it- there’s an amazing view of the glen from the giant garden (decking, chairs and a table supplied). It’s like renting your own hilltop but with a luxury modern barn conversion to retreat inside if the weather gets nasty.
Inside is beautiful, three double bedrooms and a lovely modern bathroom with bath, separate shower and underfloor heating. All those chancers across Scotland trying to rent you their self-catering house with décor and facilities that haven’t changed since the 1970s- take note! Barclayfield is EXACTLY HOW IT SHOULD BE- contemporary, bright, spotlessly clean and not a trace of flock wallpaper or tartan carpet. Neutral colours everywhere but spiced up with an upstairs coloured lighting system (if you want it on). The upper part of the barn is open plan and vast. The kitchen appliances are state of the art and spotless, with two beautiful dining tables and two lovely big sofas (again, lovers of flowery chintz won’t like this place). Brand new crockery and mountains of glassware with strict instructions that everything is washed in the dishwasher makes it feel wonderfully clean. The whole place looks like one of those places featured in the Grand Designs TV programme.
The owner is just lovely and genuinely wanted us to enjoy our stay; pointing out walks and even supplying a chilled bottle of wine, biscuits and umpteen types of tea and coffee. He even supplied some toys for the baby! This is a place for those in search of solitude and privacy but who appreciate that if they have to nip out to Tesco in Perth- it's only a 15 minute drive! We loved it! Definitely coming back.
