It was July 4th. So, I thought I'd celebrate Independence Day with a late lunch that I'm sure President Trump would enjoy. After all, nobody claims to know more about Mexico...and probably Mexican food...than our esteemed leader.
I had passed Tijuana Taxi Company for years as I drove down University Drive. So, I figured I'd give it a try.
Visually, the restaurant is very presentable. It's brightly lit on the inside, with a lot of color. Outside they have a deck with tables. Ceiling fans are there to cut the heat a bit by blowing piped in, air conditioning.
What impressed me at Tijuana Taxi Company was that they have some of the prettiest waitresses around, all of them smiling and friendly. These girls really seemed to like working here.
My waitress, Kayla, went out of her way to serve me. I chatted with her for a few minutes after I'd finished my meal. This cheerful, lovely young lady is working two jobs so that she can return to college to study psychology. Kayla is a 2nd generation American. (Her family came from the Dominican Republic.) Perhaps if the President was dining with me he'd understand the value, the work ethic and the intelligence that young immigrants like Kayla bring to our country.
Prices are very reasonable here, especially at lunch. I ordered their Combo #3 ($7.99), which included an enchilada, a chicken chimichanga, Spanish rice and refried beans. Before it came a complimentary basket of chips with some of the tastiest salsa for dipping that I've had.
My main dish was artfully presented on a colorful glass plate.
What surprised me was that a dish that looked this good didn't have a great taste. The sides...the refried beans and Spanish rice...were excellent. But, the main features of the dish, the enchilada and the chimichanga, just didn't taste as good to me as I have had at other nearby Tex-Mex restaurants. There was something of an aftertaste that I just didn't care for. That's why I'm giving Tijuana Taxi Company a 3 rating rather than a 4 or 5, which they deserve for overall ambiance and friendly, efficient service.
Taste being personal, though, I suggest you visit the Tijuana Taxi Company and judge for yourself. They certainly go all out to please their customers. As busy as they were they are obviously doing something very right. Give them a try!
