For a special birthday celebration, Leo and Olga from Eclectic Eats came to our home and prepared an amazing dining experience that brought together fresh flavours from around the world. There was thoughtful consideration and detail that went into understanding the places we've lived and our preferences. From that, Leo crafted a fine dining menu that was as inviting to all the senses as it was memorable.

I am trying to think what other Delray dining establishments to compare Eclectic Eats to... but I can't, it is in a league of it own. The owner/chef has created its own fresh vibe by offering amazing food and a funky outdoor decor. The location is a bit off the beaten path of the main downtown Delray corridor and the exterior is not that inviting, but don't let that steer you away ... as you enter the open aired dining area you are greeted by the sent of fresh herbs and tranquility. My server was genuinely friendly and aimed to please. The pride of those operating the restaurant is heartfelt.

It's important to emphasize that Thursday through Sunday evenings are currently the only times this restaurant is open; also that they accept and encourage reservations, even for a party of two. Our waiter said that they hope to extend the days as their business grows. The restaurant is family owned (always a good sign in my opinion); they originally came from Lebanon.

The restaurant is far off the beaten path, NOT walking distance from Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, in a light-industrial section of Federal Highway (US 1). There's plenty of on-site parking. Eclectic Eats' ambiance is indeed eclectic -- an interesting hodgepodge of antiques and rough-hewn handcrafted pieces, with low-keyed fusion music wafting through the air. Since rain was expected, we considered their indoor seating; we looked in at it, but it had both the look and scent of an antique store, and I knew my mold allergy would kick in if we stayed inside. Thankfully, the outdoor section, which is the lion's share of their seating anyway, has plenty of covered areas.

The outdoor seating is comfortable and spacious and the music kept at a lowish level, so it is quite possible to have a relaxing conversation over the repast. The waiter went out of his way to accommodate us; my husband asked for his food to be prepared as (spicy) hot as possible, and he was soon presented with a specially-prepared bowl of excellent hot sauce to accompany his meal. They make practically everything themselves -- including the falafel, which was the very best either of us had ever tasted on three continents! Our waiter told us that they bake (not fry) the falafel, which they coat with olive oil to give it the satisfying crunch. Actually, he noted, they don't deep fry anything there. Currently they are waiting for a liquor license to be approved, so all of the cocktails are "virgin".

The only drawback of Eclectic Eats from our point of view is that the restaurant seems pricey for such a funky location, though the food preparation, presentation and service are unarguably tip top. We went there hoping that it would be a good dive that we could frequent, but it's out of our price range except for the occasional splurge. The portions are what you would expect from a fine-dining establishment: viz., very modestly sized. We each enjoyed a rather pricey ($8) but excellently prepared virgin cocktail, then an appetizer (we shared the vegetarian platter). As entrees we chose, respectively, a falafel pannino and an ahi tuna salad. All of the food was beautifully prepared and vibrantly fresh, but the portions left both of us a little peckish even though we had had an appetizer, so we decided to have dessert. The meal for the two of us, with a normal-sized tip, was in the $90 range. We'll be back, but not as often as we would like!
