Very informative overview of Destin's history with lots of interesting artifacts, pictures and articles about Destin and the surrounding area. The curator was very friendly and informed. Very glad we visited this little gem of a museum.

“Hidden Treasure worth the trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2008

05/16/2008 -It was a rainy morning and I thought the perfect type of weather to visit a museum in. There was a tour group there. I followed along with the group and was treated to a guided tour. I heard tales of the early net fishermen and the history of the area which dated back to pre-historic times. There was a nice Native American point collection. I learned that before electricity and therfore no ice, the fishermen built pens to keep their fish fresh until they caught enough to fill a schooner to sail to Pensacola and sell. There was an exhibit depicting an early 1900’s kitchen where I learned the locals made mops from palmettos. They would strip the palmettos with a fork to make them soft and they scrubbed the floors with them. This and the wash boards along with the wood stove and oil lamps made me appreciate electricity and my swiffer sweeper. This trip to the museum was refreshing and educational. It is hard to leave the beautiful beaches in Destin but I don't think you should wait until a rainy day to tour this museum. -Jane J.N.
