If you haven't been to Destin in a while and need a great vacation, try the area. We stayed at Henderson Beach State Park which was clean, quiet, and extremely close to shopping, food, and the beach. The beach is accessed by a wooden board walk that is fairly flat for strollers, etc. and only open to the park campers. The volunteers keep the bathhouse and general park areas very clean. The road is paved and flat inside the campground with marked bike area. This made it very easy to take dogs for walk and small kids to ride their bikes. The only downside to the whole area is some road noise that was easily "drowned" out by a fan at night. All sites are completely graveled, no cable, and mostly very sunny. There is high vegetation between the campsites, and sites are angled so that they are very easy to back your unit into. Looking forward to next visit.

My husband and I stayed at Henderson Beach State Park Campground in May of 2007. Overall it was a very good experience. The sites and bath houses are very well maintained. The beach is within walking distance from the campground and is beautiful. The hosts at the campground clean each site before it is occupied. The sites are pea gravel and the roads are paved, so there is not alot of dust and sand to get on your camper, car, etc.

It is a small park overall, with very little opportunities to observe wildlife. There are no lakes or inland water to observe birds which we missed from some of the other state parks we have stayed at.

The other "down side" is the close proximity to hwy. 98 which is a busy road. The traffic can be heard from all the campsites. Particularly in the early morning, around 6, when the traffic begins to pick up, it can wake you up if you have open windows. We camped in a popup. Also, the lights from the highway can shine on your campsite at night, depending on where your site is located.

But, all this said, we will probably return next year. We love to snorkel at the East Jetty and, of course, the crystal clear gulf waters can't be beat.

The folks who run the park do an outstanding job and the campground host are the best!
