“Very Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

Just finishing up 4 nights at the B Ocean in Ft. Lauderdale. Very nice hotel with a great location. Close to a water taxi stop and there is a nice little neighborhood behind the hotel with a couple of nice restaurants and bars. One in particular, The Parrot, is a great local place and the owner Tim is an extremely nice guy making every customer feel welcome and special. The Birch state park across the street from the hotel is really beautiful. It's a great place to take about 1 1/2 hour brisk walk through Florida greenery, it cost us $2 per person to get in the park and was more than well worth it. We brought our beach chairs into the park and spent the afternoon sitting along the Intracoastal Waterway under palm trees watching the gorgeous boats go by on a day that was too windy on the beach. A short walk down A1A are many restaurants, shops and bars to enjoy. The hotel has a very small pool area, but we came for the beach anyway so that didn't matter. The view from our end room was stunning ... 2 panoramic windows showcasing the gorgeous ocean. The poolside bar isn't welcoming at all and the staff seems to encourage people to go to the inside bar. The rooms are nice and average sized as is the bathroom. The beds were very comfortable. The staff is friendly and curteous. The housekeeping is very timely. As much as we enjoyed our stay, we probably won't be staying at the B Ocean again. The main problem is that there aren't any balconies or places to sit outside and enjoy the ocean breezes. Also, the windows cannot be opened to enjoy the breezes either. That was the only down side, but a big one for us.

Dear hc5w77, thank you for your comments. Good to hear you loved our location and stunning views and that our staff took good care of you. Sorry to hear you wouldn't return due to the windows not opening. Not something we can change but I do understand your preference.

Just stayed 4 nights at B Ocean. Staff were nice and friendly and checked us in quickly. We had booked a Stunning King room so we could have the floor to ceiling windows, but were 'upgraded' on arrival to a Curved King room. The room was nice, but we would have preferred our original room. Room was a good size, with a modern bathroom, but the shower was quite small. Bed was comfortable. There's no coffee making facilities in the room, and you don't even get a complimentary bottle of water, that will cost you $5. We had the breakfast buffet in the bistro each morning, and the food was good, but a little expensive at $16 each. As other reviews have mentioned, parking will set you back about $25 a day. The pool area is quite small, and they did run out of loungers on occasion. The hotel is across the street from the beach, on a busy intersection, so it is quite noisy and crossing the road can be challenging. The hotel is quite far north on route 1A, so it's about a 10-15 minute walk to the bulk of the other hotels and restaurants, but it does means you don't have the noise of the crowds when you want to sleep. The hotel is close to the Galleria mall and one of the stops for the water taxi. Hotel is nice, but if visiting Fort Lauderdale again I would stay at one of the hotels on the waterway.

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean, but the view of the ocean is obscured by palm trees on the lower levels.

Dear nj_traveller16, thanks for taking the time to share your comments. I appreciate the top rating you gave us on service, which we work hard to achieve. I agree that the trade off to be away from the restaurant and bar scene is worth the peace and quiet at night. We are currently offering free coffee in our B'stro restaurant every morning, and plan to introduce in-room coffee makers soon.

We stayed here for my brother-in-law's birthday in March 2012. It's a great spot right along the main street (north end of the strip), but kind of not right in the middle of crazyness (it was spring break week). We were easily able to walk to the beach and to other hotels where people in our party were staying, so it was a great location for us.

The lobby is very modern and cool, but not overly pretentious. Our family checked us in before we got there, but they seemed to have no problems doing so. The rooms weren't cheap at all, but were very nice. They're pretty big and have a great view of the ocean. The shower is one of those 'rain' showers and doesn't have a door that closes all the way, but it surprisingly didn't get the whole bathroom wet. It would have been nice to have a real shower head along with the rain one because the water pressure was kind of low. They have Aveda products in the bathroom, which is pretty awesome.

The gym is small (3 treadmills, 1 elliptical, 1 bike, 1 multi-purpose weight machine) but it was still nice. There's a bar by the pool, and another indoors that has one of those cool wine dispensers where you get the card and choose taste/half glass/full glass. They have a special for people staying in the hotel where you get a certain amount of money on your wine card for a discount during certain times.

We didn't actually use the pool at the hotel (we went to another family member's hotel and used theirs). It looked nice, but small, which was why we went elsewhere. I could see it getting crowded during the day, but it seemed to have a good/fun atmosphere.

There's also a sushi restaurant/bar in the hotel, which was also very good. They had a lot of great sushi, as well as other options for people who aren't completely into sushi.

The only really annoying thing was that the elevators were slow. And I mean SLOW. And there were not stairs, at least not that we could find that didn't seem like they would set off a fire alarm. Pretty common hotel problem, but it got to the point where you had to plan 5 min ahead or so that you wanted to leave/go back to your room.

They have an airline check in thing in the lobby where you're supposed to be able to check in for your flight. Um, no. We spent ~10 minutes trying to get it to work and then gave up. So save yourselves (and everyone behind you in line who has hope it will somehow work for them) the painful frustration of watching a giant computer screen buffer and check in for your flights on your phones.

Overall, a cool place if you're willing to throw down a little $$$. Since we were staying here for the purpose of hanging out with other people, it worked for us and we had a great time. Cute stuffed animal sea turtle on the bed when you check in (not to take for free, but still cute). More hotels should do that.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms here face the beach, so you really can't go wrong. However, the elevators...

Dear NoVa Tripper, thanks for your detailled comments. Glad to see you enjoyed our awesome Aveda amenities, great views and generous size of your room. Yes, all our rooms faced the the beach, at different angles. I will look into our Moncierge (large screen) issues because it's been working fine and people are printing their boarding passes regularly. As for the speed of elevators, it really depends on the amount of foot traffic during the day. we have 3 guest elevators for 240 rooms which is very adequate for vertical transportation.

Just wanted to write about B Ocean. I am here right now. We're are staying here for 4 nights before our cruise which leaves tomorrow. I was skeptical about B Ocean after reading some negative reviews. Our stay has been remarkable. The entire hotel is very clean, the staff has been amazing to us. They have gone out of there way to recommend restaurants ( and they have been good!! ), excellent housekeeping services, arrange shuttles for us and we have especially loved Miguel from B'istro on the Beach. They have really great food and the service from him was top notch. The pool is small but it's a small sacrifice for the other fantastic ammenities you will get here. When we return from our cruise next Sunday we needed to book a hotel unil Monday when our flight leaves. I had not reserved anything because I didn't know if we would want to go back to B Ocean but after the first day I made sure I got a reservation back here for next week.

Room Tip: The only bad thing is the pullout couches, that was awful.

Stayed at the B end of March 2012. Main entrance and lobby area are very nice. Check-in was a breeze. Room was ready about an hour early. The pool is small, but we always managed to get a lounger. People hogged the covered areas. The two negatives about the pool are - nothing to look at. At two other 4-star hotels on the beach that we have stayed at you have a wonderful view of the ocean from the pool. The other negative is the trucks delivering various supplies to the businesses surrounding the pool/hotel. The trucks are noisy and at times were smelly. As for the rooms, i thought they were plenty spacious. The bed and pillows were very comfy. I thought the housekeeping was a little lacking. Didnt even fluff the pillows, and did not put the turtle back on the bed (no big deal, but i am sure they are supposed to). I was very surprised at the stained carpets in one year old hotel. The bathroom was nice but i was also suprised at the mildew in the shower. Bathroom linens need to be replaced. Towels are very thin and not soft. Our room was very noisy - plumbing from beside us and above us i believe. We could hear alot of noise from the room next to us. I can't even explain what the air conditioner did, but the noise was terrible. The people in the hallway were very loud (can't hold that against The B). We were directly across from the elevators which was definitely a negative. We were priceline guests and i think hotels save those types of rooms for guests who are staying at a discounted rate. I did not sleep well at all the 3 nights i was there. I can't really call the hotel a 4-star but i think they try. Oh and about the $25 parking. I guess i am OK with it, i don't have much of a choice. But again, at a certain hotel further south, i think they charge $30 but it is not valet. $25 per day at the B actually ends up being more than that with tips each time you want your car. Loved the free coffee.

Dear brooker, many thanks for your comments. Glad to hear that your check-in was a breeze and the room was ready earlier than expected (we try really hard to offer this to all but its sometimes challenging when people don't leave at the established c/out time). I have followed up with our team on your concerns with Housekeeping, but pleased to hear that you found the room to be spacious an the bed comfy. We don't assign toom types based on what discounts people get, only based on room type booked. Our parking fee is on the lower end of the spectrum on the beach based on my last survey conducted earlier this month for all FLL full service beach hotels.

In our late 20s took a few days off and traveled up from Key Largo. Found a good deal on priceline. Hotel a bit of a walk from the main strip on A1A but still a nice walk. With that being said beach was not as crowded but for a four star hotel expected them to have some beach chairs which I saw others offered, we paid 5 dollars a chair and thats the DEAL that the guy gave us seeing that he was closing in 2 hours. Room was nice not the biggest but only down fall was i specifically asked for a room with a good view and got a second floor room with a view of a palm tree and a little bit of the beach. Pool small and pretty crowed most of the time, 10 dollar drinks expensive but good. But over all i was say it was a nice experience and the staff was excellent! Would recommend!
