“Fabulous view and casual chic decor”

I stayed here to be in the heart of Lauderdale Airshow. Stunning view of beach. Very hip and casual lobby and superb restaurant Saia with Asian specialties. Rooms are comfy and chic. Service very helpful

"B Unimpressed."

The B Ocean is a 3 star hotel at best that is trying to present itself as a higher end establishment. The design of the lobby, restaurants, and pool area are pleasant and modern however the individual rooms and service leave a lot to be desired. My stay at the B was an extended one as part of a work trip so my experience may not be typical but many of this hotel’s shortcomings are impossible to ignore. For a weekend stay, the ocean views may be enough to make up for these failings but I found the exceptional views the B’s only real saving grace.

So let’s start with that. The views are quite good though with the hotel in an ‘L’ shape on the corner, the only truly unobstructed ocean view rooms are on the very end. Despite the photos on the website, the B is separated from the beach by A1A so guests will need to cross traffic unlike with a few other hotels further down the beach.

There are many basic amenities/services that are lacking at the B that I would have assumed would be standard fare at a 4 star hotel. Perhaps the most basic part of many a guest’s day is not easily accessible. While there is complementary coffee available, this is available downstairs in the Bistro and only in the mornings. There is no refrigeration in the room for food and drink items. The rooms are not very wide so if someone is using the desk space, the other guest will have to climb over the bed to get to the window or the only other chair in the room. The showers in the morning begin to run cold after only 6 to 10 minutes of use and since they have no doors to keep the heat in, it quickly becomes uncomfortable.

The claims of their “B Our Guest” program to provide exceptional service are unfounded. Housekeeping services were minimal. Dirty glasses were never replaced, even when set out prominently. When placed outside the door they were taken but never replaced leaving me with only one glass. My request for additional glasses made at the front desk never bore fruit. The tissue box was replaced but they never pulled up the tissues to where you could get at them. I’ve had hotels rated less do nice things like tear off and fold the end of the toilet paper so it looks nice. A week into my stay, I stepped on a shard of glass in the carpet that must have been there for some time. The front desk claimed they vacuum everyday but I’m not convinced of that.

The telephone in the room never worked properly and the speakerphone would randomly turn on at night, broadcasting a dial tone and eventually the “off the hook” tones until shut off. This issue was brought to the attention of the front desk 3 times as well and never fixed. To add insult to the injury, the handsets would not work and the speakerphone would only turn on when you needed it to in order to call downstairs for anything 50% of the time. The door to the room isn’t square in the frame and has a large gap at the bottom so there’s significant light leakage from the hall at night. The beds and pillows are rather uncomfortable and I stopped using the pillows completely after a few nights and chose to wad up a blanket to use as a replacement instead. The rooms may be non-smoking but that didn’t prevent a strong smoke smell from entering the room the other night through the bathroom’s exhaust fan.

The bottom line is that the hotel’s 4 star rating is complete farce. The views are not enough to compensate for the many failings and a thrifty traveler can probably get a similar deal on a much nicer hotel further south along the beach. It feels like they are desperately trying to project an air of sophistication and class to distract you from how sub-par the actual rooms and service are. While this is probably a 3 star hotel, I have to rate it poor because of the consistently poor service and of how disappointing the entire stay was.

Room Tip: If you can request a room, try to get rooms 1-3 as those are on the ocean facing side.

Dear Tailin, thanks for sharing your observations. Disappointed to see your laundry list of issues. Obviously, we didn't meet your expectations and I take this to heart. That being said, please note that we are rated a 4-star property by AAA, and we certainly have earned it. Having myself experienced many of the other hotels on the beach, I know we deliver a great experience to our guests. I apologize for our shortcomings and have already shared your feedback with our entire team.

We recently stayed at the B Ocean in Fort Lauderdale after getting off a cruise ship. We thought the staff were excellent - very friendly and very helpful with getting tours lined up, information, helping us with getting our boarding passes for our flight and the Valet even helped my husband with getting his phone charged. We would definitely recommend the B Ocean to friends. It is close to restaurants, a mall, the Water Taxis, they serve complimentary coffee in the morning, the pool area was great, and overall just a great place. The beds were very comfortable, the rooms were clean and we had a wonderful ocean view. The whole experience was awesome (and the turtle on the bed was cute!)
Thanks everyone for making our stay memorable.

Room Tip: Ocean View was so beautiful!

Interesting boutique hotel. The rooms are
A little small but all face the ocean. Hotel is on the beach so the views are great. Decor is different... All white with colored lights that change from blue to red. Great staff. Fairly fresh renovation as of 4/12. Highly rated sushi restaurant in the lobby.

We loved the B Ocean, it had wow factor from the moment we stepped into the lobby all the way to when we entered our room. Fantastic views from our room right up Fort Launderdale Beach. Location was very good for us, just a bit north of the main Fort Lauderdale beach action, which was only a 10 minute walk away. Two things marred our stay which could be easily improved:
1. The wardrobe doors in the rooms are of a very free-sliding type. These made a loud banging noise if left to slide into the walls at either end. The could be heard from the rooms adjacent, and was loud enough to wake you from a deep sleep. Providing simple rubber stoppers to the ends of the doors or walls would make this annoying problem go away.
2. The valets on the driveway think they own the place, and took forever to retrive our bags upon check out. They need to get a better system, and learn that they are there for the customers; not the other way around.

Room Tip: Get a room higher up for a better view.

DearMR028, thank you for your strong rating and also for sharing your 2 concerns. We will definitely take your suggestion at heart with the rubber bumpers. Why didn't I think about that? As for the valet experience, I'm sorry if it took a while to get the bags and will share you feedback on being more accomodating.

Anyone who has tried to book a hotel on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale knows that the prices can be pretty steep to stay in the best location. B Ocean is ideally situated on the corner of Sunrise and AIA and has convenient access to all the activities on that prime stretch of beach.

The hotel lacks some of the major amenities that some of the larger resorts have: the pool area is really small and quickly gets crowded, midweek. There are no dedicated beach chair umbrella rentals, it's just public beach in front of the hotel. There is no outdoor patio dining.

We did not eat at the Saia restaurant, but it looked very upscale. However, they have a great bistro where we did have breakfast and lunch a couple of times and it was great. Service was a little spotty and they could have cleared the tables more quickly, but the food was good and reasonably priced.

Our room was very nice, with floor to ceiling windows with a view of the beach and eye-catching artwork. The bathroom was modern and functional. The decor, from the walls to the linens is white, which has a very clean look. Even in the hallway, the walls are a matte white. This is very tough to keep clean and could look shabby quickly from scuffs if they do not touch it up frequently, but it looks like the B Ocean is immaculately kept up.

We had a large, flat screen TV and the free Wi-Fi is an excellent bonus. The maid service was a little slow, but this was not a major inconvenience. My friend got stung by a bee at the beach and the front desk was quick to provide some first aid items.

Another advantage of the B Ocean is that you can walk down the AIA to peruse those restaurants and hotels, or you can go up Sunrise to go to the Galleria. This would be quite a hike from the Ritz-Carlton, which is at the other end. But the B Ocean is between the two. So you have several options for shopping and dining.

As far as noise goes, our room was very quiet, but I think if there were noisy people on our floor, you would be able to hear them. So I can't vouch for the soundproofness, but I'd be willing to take a chance.

I would stay at the B Ocean again.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view and/or balcony.

Dear Wimble40, thanks for your positive comments. Glad to see that you appreciate our constant efforts to keep our hotel immaculate. By the way, good news on the patio dinning: we are going to be adding an outdoor patio at SAIA so people will be able to drink and eat "al fresco" in the future.

The lobby, with it's dramatic changing color walls, is a very pleasant gretting when you arrive. The room that we had was on a corner with one floor to ceiling having a view of the ocean and Birch state park and the other wall had a beautiful ocean front view. The room was very clean and the housekeeping staff did an excellent job every day. It is in a nice, fun, neighborhood with a few pubs around the corner. next door is a beach store where you can rent a used beach chair for $3.00 per day instead of using the hotel's chairs which I would assume would be much more expensive.
The only drawback to my staying here again, is that you do not have a balcony or the ability to open a window to get some nice ocean breezes. There is no place to sit outside in the evening for a cocktail except for the pool area. It would have been nice to sit on a balcony, or porch and look at the ocean at the end of the day.

Dear NewJerseyJoe13, thanks for your great comments. I hear you on the window & balcony feedback, but our hotel was built that way, so no way around it! On the flip side, not many hotels have the unobstructed views that we offer.
