“Great place for kids' birthday parties!”
Reviewed 15 March 2012

The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium is a great place for kids! Our family spends a lot of our free time hiking, canoeing, kayaking and camping in SWFL and we frequent many of the preserves and parks in the area. Our boys, ages 6 and 7, are thrilled to see animals in their natural habitat, and have fun learning more about both local and exotic animals at the Calusa Nature Center.

In the past 4 months, each of our boys celebrated his birthday with a party at the Calusa Nature Center. In December and again in March, we used the Pine Pavilion for a private party and and had an animal show. Adam, the biologist, brought several animals for the kids to see-and many of them they were allowed to touch! He's very passionate and knowledgable about the rescued animals in his charge and gave a terrific presentation. The parents were as intrigued as the kids! Afterwards, the kids ran through the nature trails, checked out the exhibits in the museum, the touch tank, and the various enclosures. They had a great time, and learned alot too!

The Calusa Nature Center , although not a state-of-the-art facility, takes good care of the injured or at-risk animals in their care. The center also provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the many creatures that share our world.

“Great Place to Visit”
Reviewed 5 March 2012

A great place for a walk through different FL habitats. They are constantly improving and adding exhibits. Try it at Christmastime when they light the boardwalk, Love the snakes, too! Nice for all ages.

“Just okay, avoid the "reptile show"”
Reviewed 3 March 2012

The planetarium show was fun, some of the birds were nice to see. HOWEVER...there were some animals in what appeared to be cages too small for them. ALSO...the "reptile show" was horrendous. The show consisted of a woman and her teenaged helper throwing mice and rats to the alligators and snakes, laughing about it the whole time, and making sure to point out every bloody detail. There were small children present who looked frightened. This woman actually got bit by one of the snakes right in front of everyone; one of the children started crying at this point. I realize that animals eat other animals to survive; nevertheless, I feel this fact should not be turned into a spectacle, or a laughing matter. The woman educating the small crowd said things like "the frog farts after it eats mice, it's so cool!" My family left the center after this, and we will not be returning.

“Low budget but very nice and long walking trails.”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

This place is low budget and has a little bit of a rundown feel. But the real reason to come is to see some of the exotic birds and walk through their extensive trail system. Some of the trails can be a little more rugged than a boardwalk experience so be ready for it.
