We are not the kind of people who tend to stay in luxurious places...and to arrive here, after our trip to Ecuador, for a few days of cosseting, was unbelievable!
We haven't been to the Keys before, and I had no idea it was such a stunning area of natural beauty. The resort is right on the bay front, and apart from a little noise from the road (which is unavoidable here as the island is so narrow!) it is beautifully tranquil. We were offered an upgrade to a suite (I had reserved a guest room) for a nominal cost, and it was well worth it: our suite was gorgeous, with full kitchen, dining table, sofa, large bedroom and bathroom with shower. Everything you could possibly want was there...far more comfortable than our house!!
Ronnie, the owner, was incredibly helpful when we arrived, and as well as checking us in, told us all about the area and provided us with suggestions as to the places she recommended we ate, and visited. The hotel has a great range of leaflets and maps - even down to their own map of the immediate area showing local eateries.
We settled in, and then borrowed one of the kayaks they kindly provide - not our area of expertise, but it was great fun going round in circles for an hour or so... We then swam off the floating dock, and were surprised how pleasantly warm the water was on the bay side.
Not being avid restaurant frequenters, we drove down to the supermarket a few miles down the road and stocked up in guacamole, hummus, cheese, beer, cold meats etc and had a fabulous meal by starlight, sitting in the tiki hut at the end of the pier.
I really couldn't improve this hotel! The personal service is outstanding: Ronnie made all the reservations we needed to do the activities we had chosen, and even found time to come and chat to us afterwards to see how we enjoyed it.
If you do come to stay, make sure you find time to do the tour of the gardens with Rick, a extremely knowledgable and enthusiastic ethno-botanist who has been taken on by the owners to develop an oasis of indigenous plants.
Thank you for a wonderful short break - I just wish it could had been longer!

Room Tip: Do upgrade to a suite if you get the chance! For not much money, you get a whole lot more!

What a wonderful surprise! This small, carefully cared for gem of a place is tucked into the Key Largo Bay where manatee swim and fish fly out of the water at sunset. If you are looking for restorative moments and a staff who can direct you (but know how to stay out of your way), beautiful surroundings in a peaceful lovely place...this is it. The accommodations are terrific, the nearby kayaking opportunities are vast (the Gulf and the Atlantic) and The Kona Kai was exactly what we needed. Perfecto!

Thank you Linda Z! The greatest joy for our entire staff is a: "Kona Kai was exactly what we needed." We strive for this with every guest, and while we work towards perfection, that's not always possible yet we always do our best to keep our "score in the 90's." The best way to enjoy Kona Kai is to let us know how we're doing while you're here with us!

We were here celebrating our 25th anniversary, the staff was amazing, very informative about where to eat, and what to do in the area. The resort itself is so beautiful, I enjoyed sitting on the dock with my feet in the water and also napping by the pool. Cant forget the super friendly squirrels that will just right up on your lap and eat from your hands. Great place to unwind and relax. I think that the only improvement that could be made is better window coverings, the only thing on the windows was wooden slatted blinds that let in way to much sun to early in the morning making it hard to sleep past sun up. Also, the bed room doors were double french doors that open to the sitting room where a TV was so lots of light came in from the sitting room to the bedroom, drapes would of been nice for those doors. Note that they only clean the rooms every 2-3 days so on a short trip, you miss out on that. That might be more importnat to some people than others. The first night there was very quiet but the second there was some sort of truck going on both sides of the resort at about 10 PM at night, it was very loud, my husband went out to investigate and thought that is was a truck spraying some sort of chemicals, it had lots of flashing lights too, made it hard to sleep.

Dear Cynanne: So glad you found our staff "amazing," as that is what they strive for so thank you for the sincere compliment! Nice to read your comments about the beauty and restfulness that Kona Kai offered you, and sorry to learn the mosquito truck came by so late - normally, when needed (summertime), they come by around 7pm. To protect the environment we do not do a "daily maid service" unless you request it - in which case we are happy to freshen your room, sheets, and towels daily. The squirrels and our staff will be happy to welcome you again and will note you wish a daily maid service.

Just got back from a two night "unwind" break at this lovely little resort. The suite we got had a lovely little kitchen and a comfy little bed. I say little bed as it was probably the smallest queen bed I have ever slept in and although comfortable, my boyfriend and I have never been closer. The room itself was right in the middle of the resort, by the check in area , and on the main walkway, however there was absolutely no noise to disturb us.
The highlights of this place however are the staff and the location.
The staff are wonderfully accomodating and make sure that you have all the information you need about the hotel and it's environs. They also can tell you the best places to eat, and maybe more importantly, when to go to them.
The location of this resort is excellent. It is not so far down the keys that you have to drive hours and hours from Miami to get there. A short commute and you feel like you have left the noise of the city hundreds of miles away. On one of our days we took the very short walk ( maybe 40 paces) to the waters edge and fished (ok so we defrosted bait on a hook in the water) and read the whole day away. When we got hot, a quick dip in the refreshing chilled pool hit the spot.
I would highly recommend this place for anyone who needs to get away from "noise" for a time and just recharge .
