“overrated and overpriced”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2012

All sites have EWS, a BBQ grill and picnic table. Sites are extremely narrow (average width = 16 feet) and not very deep. Laundry (wash and dry = $1.50 each), free wifi at the rear of concession store. There is a small beach, canoe and kayak rentals are available, and there is an on-site dive shop and snorkling tours are available. This is a small park so the biking and walking opportunities are limited. At $43 per night (tax in) the campground is overpriced.

We camped for five nights at John Pennekamp and loved it. The sites are big enough that you don't feel squashed, and we appreciated the trees and foliage around each site. We were surprised and happy to find that in addition to water and electric, each site also had a sewer connection. Rare at many state parks. The bathrooms were clean and nice, and so was the laundry area. There were no mosquitoes at all, but there were no-see-ums, so we went inside during dusk. The park offers scuba and snorkeling trips, which we didn't do, but we enjoyed the glass-bottom boat very much. I hope we can get reservations to camp there again next year.

The snorkeling boat here is a mass-production operation. The crew showed contempt for the snorkelers (maybe because they weren't divers). Even worse, they were quite careless about watching out for the people in the water. There were 34 people who went out to snorkel, but only one member of the crew of three actually observed those in the water. One snorkeler was caught in the current and was drifting away from the boat's stern. Nobody on the boat noticed. Another snorkeler had to go to her help. Only after he shouted to the boat, did anyone on the crew respond to the situation.

You would have a much better snorkeling experience on any number of boats operating from elsewhere on Key Largo. And you could skip the $9 admission fee to the park.

Im a local , I live in Miami 45 min from Key largo we had been in several campgrounds however this was our first time in Pennekamp .

Park staff was very friendly , Park looks to be good , not great but just good . We didn't walk around cause the weather was very bad with 99% rain .

Anyway the worse thing on the park are the camp sites ....

I cant believe they rent that to people , it looks like a rush traffic hour with one RV a few inches away from other and some tens right in the middle ...
If you want privacy you can just park any where outside the food-market closer to you and you will have more privacy than this .
Sites are so narrow than even my tent almost won't fit

On the good side :

there are lot of things to do like hiking ,the aquarium is nice and clean but with very few fishes
snorkeling and dive places are just around the corner .
I didnt try the snorkeling boat but I hear it is very good ,
kayaking tru the mangroves is worth it
Boat ramp is decent for $8 which is very cheap considering that harrys park just a few miles south of PK is $25 which is a rip
PARK STAFF WAS VERY FRIENDLY ... IM NOT AMERICAN , MY ENGLISH IS ON SOME WAY LIMITED AND I FELT IN BETWEEN FRIENDS
I will go again as soon the weather clears but not for night camping , Just to use the boat ramp and hang around for a day .

PENNEKAMP ... COME ON READ REVIEWS HERE AND TAKE ACTION ... FIX THE WRONGS AND YOU WILL BE THE PREFERRED

Room Tip: Don't worry looking for a good site .... there are not good sites here

prepare for lights all night, noisy generators and huge RVs blocking all the breezes in their "campground". the asphalt road collects heat and stinks terribly while the staff drives up and down in golf carts "blowing the rocks off". this park has some great amenities, but tent camping was not any fun at all.

This was the worst camping experience i have ever had! We were so excited to be tent camping here for 3 days. But when we arrived we were soon disapointed to learn that our very public camp site was sandwhiched between two loud and stinky RVs and off a freshly blacktoped road. The fumes from the road loomed over us like a toxic
cloud. Our stay was made worse by the constant sounds of blowers being driven around by maintenance workers in golf carts to blow off rocks from the road. There was nothing natural about this setting. It was like camping out in a driveway in anywhere USA. Nights there werr horrible because the constant lights, tv and AC being on. There really should be an area seperate from RVs. This place is great for RVs because the campsites are so close to eachother. This place is more like an RV park than a campground. You cannot even get a stake in ground (we even used a hatchet) because the limestone rocks that cover the camping driveway are so compacted. So in closing come to play here the swiming is great but do not stay here if you are in a tent.

Visited the park and stayed 10 days. Best time was on the dive boat wtih Captain Dan, Rick, Lindnsey, Sue and Drew. They were an awesome crew that made diving at Key Largo fantastic!!!! Will go back next year....not only to stay in the park but to dive with the best dive team ever! The only drawback that I saw.....NO TIP JAR for the crew on the boat. Its nice to let the guys and gals know they are appreciated for all the work they do. Not only did they carry the tanks to the boat, changed your tanks after your first dive and then carried the tanks to get filled. Drew was a good tour guide of the Spiegel....awesome wreck dive! He also made sure we had a good time on the dive!

Room Tip: Call a Year ahead of time
