“Great place to stay - at the best possible location”
Reviewed 9 April 2012 via mobile

Enjoyed a 2 night stay in probably the best room in the house (room 201, with the superb balcony and splendid view of the ocean).

The location is terrific. You can park your car and do everything on foot or by bike from this house and the quit end of Duval street.

The house is old but very well maintained. It is a bit noisy (street noise as well as noise from the other rooms) but the charm more than compensates for that. Pool area is very nice and much beter than the beach next door.

The service of the staff is ok, but there could be a bit more attention to detail. Example is the breakfast buffet: great choice of bread and fruits, but why not put a cover over that gorgeous food to keep the flies away?

Prices are at the high end but I guess with the location and the appeal of the house there are many takers.

A little background: We were recently married at the mansion and stayed on the property for six nights. Because of the popularity of the location (and KW in general), we started the planning process a year in advance (highly recommended). This review will give you an insight in staying and planning an event here.

First, the property. The private, gated grounds are the most scenic and well maintained on the island. The pool is fantastic, overlooking the ocean. Non-guests paid each day we were here just to use the pool. The grounds also have a small bar with plenty of seating, hammocks, plenty of lounge chairs, as well as fountains and plantings that add to the ambiance. Each day Chris is out and about making sure everything is perfect for the guests. We have visited KW many times and have never been so happy to spend time lounging at a hotel.

The mansion itself is very unique, each of the 18 rooms being completly different. There are some quirks with each of the rooms (the House is 116 years old so what do you expect). We stayed in 301, which is on the third floor (no elevator) and had a seperate seating area and a large whirlpool in the bedroom. The suite was comfortable and useful as the bridal party used it to get ready for the wedding. Our guests occupied most of the other rooms in the main house, cabanas (101-104), and the Lopez House across the street. Every room we saw (except maybe 204 and 106) were great, and certainly unique. My parents stayed in the Lopez Suite which was huge. It had a full kitchen, large bedrrom, bathroom, and living/dining room. We only had a couple of gripes with 301, none of which would deter us from staying there again. First, the toilet seat hinges were secured by grey duct tape, which I thought was pretty tacky at $300+/nt. I guess its better than no toilet seat though. Second, there was no safe in the room, which was a little disappointing but certainly not a deal breaker. And third, the cable tv malfunctioned one night but again, no a big deal. All in all, we would stay in 301 again without question if there weren't so many other rooms we want to try.

The staffing can be a bit confusing at times (more on that in the event planning review). Ted at the front desk was an absolute pleasure to deal with. His attitude and treatment of guests was incredible. He took an active interest in our days events and helped us with any questions we had about the property or the island. The young man who serviced our rooms everyday was also very personable and catered to our every need. Chris, as I stated above, can talk the palms off the trees. He was helpful and gave good suggestions (most times) for whatever you wanted. The only negative we had involving staff working throughout our stay was the fill-in from La Concha who was "stuck" working at the House because he "would rather be working on the other end of Duval St." Sorry buddy, the temper tantrum didn't help our already less than stellar view of you. But even with this one bad apple, the staff as a whole at the House was truly amazing, and I haven't even gotten into the event coordinators yet!

When planning an event in KW you have to prepare yourselves, especially if you are from the Northeast (Boston in our case). First, those in KW are not running at the frantic pace we usually do, which is something I admire. Don't freak out if you email/phone call isn't responded to in 12 seconds. Also, turnover is huge. Over a years time we dealt with two or three different event coordinators. This resulted in confusion regarding contractual obligations, promises, expectations and the like. With that said, our event was overseen throughout the entire process by the David Cain, the head of events at La Concha and the House. Even with the instability at the coordinator position, he was there to talk us off the ledge a few times. Near the end of the planning stage, we were introduced to our final coordinator, Jaime Thigpen. Jaime took over our event and made sure it was perfect. She was incredible to deal with, making this stressful process easier. Her demeanor was a calming influence as we went over the final details the day before the event. David and Jaime really helped pull off an event that had so many moving parts.

So to end my novel I say this, if you are looking for a unique place to enjoy an incredible stay, consider the Southernmost House. The grounds, rooms, staff, location (opposite end of Duval but walking distance to Mallory Sq), view, and of course the pool, will cause you to forget any other place you may have stayed in previous visits. After 24 hours back in reality, we have booked our room for October.

Room Tip: Rooms 101,104,201,202,301, and the suites in the Lopez House are a good place to start.

We spent 2 days and 1 night in Key West. We choose to stay at the Southernmost House. We stayed in Room 1 (or 101) - right on the ocean (there were no rooms in the main house available). We loved it! We were right on the ocean. We had a very comfortable king bed with a nice room with a little kitchenette, living room and full bath. It was clean and neat. Check in was easy - we were able to check in a little early (we arrived around 1pm) and they also allowed us a little later check out around 1:30pm - which was very nice. We had wanted to lay by the pool and ocean and then shower before leaving.
The staff was very kind and extremely helpful.
The breakfast that was included was wonderful - I thought they offered a lot at breakfast....fruit, yogurt, cereal, breads & bagels, pastry....and of course, coffee, tea and juice.
The location seemed perfect - with the gated entrance for some privacy and the quietness at the pool and oceanside it was all wonderful. What a beautiful and historic property! It was interesting to see the list of who had stayed there in the past.
If I ever return to Key West I would want to stay here again....it was truly a wonderful stay. I did not want to leave the Southernmost House the day we were to depart - it was beautiful and sunny and I just wanted to stay there laying ocean side for the day and then dip in the pool!
By the way - this is on the ocean - but there is not a beach.
You are only a few short steps to the Southern Most Point for photos and you are right on Duval Street for all the action - just a few steps and you are there.

Room Tip: Face the ocean - it is so beautiful!

We had reservations about writing a review about this bed and breakfast because we wanted to keep this wonderful place to ourselves! We've been to Key West many times and always wanted to stay here, so in late January we stayed 4 glorious days in room 201. We had our own private balcony overlooking the pool and ocean, sunsets and sunrises were incredible. The bed was very comfortable as was the bathroom, with a great shower. Breakfast was great, fresh baked goodies, yogurt and fresh fruit, attentive staff with attention to detail. Location, location, location, as far south as you can get on Duval St., with a wonderful walk into town, the restaurant across the street at the Southernmost Hotel? was outstanding.

Room Tip: Our room was 201 and we felt it was the best, they have cottages by the pool area that were so nice...

Beautiful place to stay in the perfect location (on the beach, at the quite end of DuVal street). It was a little pricey, but worth it. Hard to bealieve that we slept in the same place that former presidents had stayed. This home is steeped in history. The pool is nice, and the breakfast was good. When we go back to Key West, we will definately stay here, if it is available. If not, we'll stay at the Southernmost Hotel.

The Southernmost House is absolutely beautiful. The staff was friendly and helpful. As much as there is to see and do in Key West, you will want to spend most of your time poolside. I can not remember feeling such depression as when it came time to check out. You will not want to leave! We will, with out a doubt, be back.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 302. Views of pool and ocean.

Our first visit to Key West. Absolutely lovely! We frequently search for Bed and Breakfasts. How fortunate I was to make a find like this! A great location overlooking the ocean, restful, quaint. The location was very convenient. Our room was lovely; the staff was friendly and helpful. We interacted with Ariel a lot because she was the one on duty when we had questions or needed help. No matter what the question, she had the answer and was efficient and eager to help. We plan to return next year and stay in the same room.
