Amazing location right on the beach. Large pool(s) with plenty of seating. Tiki bar at the pool, overlooking the beach with great food and drinks. The rooms were nice and large. A little dated but clean and comfortable.

These were newer condo's, generally quiet, except for noise from the road during busy times. You can stay 1 or multple nights, like a hotel. You can also access the beach and pools at the main Islander property, which we did . The sunsets were nice, location was good to walk to several popular restaurants. The pool is nice, small, but not real busy while we were there, but our kids preferred the pools at the main resort. We also use the jetski rental at the main resort and they were very helpful and accomodating. Only downside was VERY firm beds and some confusion with the bill at checkout.

Room Tip: There are speed bumps when you first enter the property that are noisy, so I wouldn't want a con...

From Crystal at the front desk to the view, our room, the pools, the restaurant, the jovial bartender...it was spectacular! We usually go to Mexico, but opted to switch it up & it's been the best decision! It's so spread out so as to not be affected by neighbors or noise, very clean and a friendly staff. W will be back for sure!

Room Tip: They're all good....they're all villas.

The Islander was a beautiful resort in Islamorada that is on the list of places to go back to for us...it had huge rooms that were all in great locations..even the courtyard rooms are a VERY short walk to the pool and beach..the courtyard is absolutely gorgeous with hammocks and beautiful flowers and palms...the pool is huge and infinity style and the hottub is great...the other pool a few feet away from the first on the tiki bar patio is also big..the beach was a fair size although if you are looking for sandy beaches than this is not the place..but I don't think you will find any really decent beaches in islamorada anyways since it is mainly a fishing island...the resort has a beautiful lighted fishing pier where there are tons of grunt fish and needle nosed fish to be caught...the complimentary breakfast is awesome..coffee and tea all day and for breakfast there is various fresh fruit, cereals, oatmeals, pastries, ego waffles and french toast and yogurt...it is a money saver...the tiki bar had ok conch fritters but the service was pretty slow...all in all though the islander was a beautiful place to stay with clean rooms and a nice staff

I don't understand the high ratings here. It's an OK hotel. Overpriced, but what isn't in the Keys? And yes, it is very close to some decent restaurants. We had an outstanding dinner at Mile Marker 88 and an excellent breakfast at a hole-in-the-wall bakery nearby.

The "beach" is sort of like sand, but I'd call it sand-colored grit. If you can scuff it with your shoe, it isn't a beach to me. You'd need a pick to dig in it. The view from the beach is excellent, though.

The room was large, airy, bright, and had a high ceiling. It was clean and attractive. The bathroom was tiny. There was a kitchenette that seemed well equipped, though we didn't use it.

Breakfast is an affair straight out of a Day's Inn in West Virginia. You eat in the lobby and you can choose from something that resembles a pastry that needs to be microwaved or corn flakes from a large dispenser. We took one look and hit the road. Fox News, which seems to be obligatory in motels that serve corn flakes in bulk, was playing on the TV in the dining area.

The cleaning staff showed up at 6:30 and their workstation was just a few doors down. They talked as they walked by our room and you could hear every sound. That went on for about 20 minutes, so sleeping was out of the question.

They claim they have watersports and bicycles and I suppose that, technically, they do, but it's an old motel trick that I find underhanded.

Years ago, my wife and I rented a hotel room in Nags Head that featured "access to tennis courts". When we arrived, we learned that the tennis courts were an unrelated business a mile or so away. The hotel didn't even offer discounted rates. What they should have advertised instead of "tennis court access" was "tennis courts a mile or so away if you want to drive there and pay for them."

Someone runs a bike and boat rental business from a shed on the same "beach" as the Islander. On the day we arrived, perfectly sunny and 70 degrees, I walked down to rent a bike and, in fact, I had my eye on a small sailboat. When no one showed up for 15-20 minutes, I hiked back to the front desk where I was told that the rental shed's sole employee had told them he was leaving at 2:30. Since we were leaving the next morning, the sailboat and the bikes wouldn't be in my future.

(By the way, if the sand is hard enough to ride a bike on, is it really a beach?)

I complained to the Islander's manager who told me that she agreed it was ridiculous and that she knew the owner. She would complain about the employee next time she saw him. Not exactly the relationship or outcome I had hoped for.

So, the Islander is an overpriced motel (granted, not by Keys standards) with a rock-hard ersatz beach, a free breakfast that harkens back to cheap roadside hotels, a tiny bathroom, loud cleaning staff and a watersports/bike rental concession if the attendant hasn't decided he really, really needs to go fishing.

On the positive side, if you have small children, it may be one of their last chances to see what TV sets looked like back in the day. And unfortunately, it may be one of the better bets in Islamorado. Just don't set your expectations too high.

Room Tip: Don't get a room anywhere near the maid's workstation. Their carts and conversations will aw...
