We visited Grates Cove Studios at the recommendation of our Inn Keeper and it was just as amazing as she described. This is an eclectic, but charming little restaurant in an old school house. The fusion of traditional Newfoundland and New Orleans cuisine was superb. Almost every dish could be made gluten free. As they are a small restaurant, I recommend calling 24 hours ahead of time to let them know you will be coming and have food allergies. I had the gluten free vegetable pancake and it was divine! Another reviewer stated that this place is overpriced, but I disagree. The food quality was wonderful, the service was excellent, and the view was spectacular! If the saying is true that “you get what you pay for,” then one shouldn’t complain about a moderate price for the outstanding culinary experience that is Grates Cove Studios.

We booked what would be the master bedroom in a lovely house with an ensuite bathroom and large window with a view overlooking the cove. You have access to a living room, kitchen and eating area should you wish to stay a while. The room was very large and the bed extremely comfy. I lolled in bed the next morning and watched some humpbacks swimming by in the distance. What a way to wake up! It was wonderful and Terrence and Courtney were wonderful hosts. Their restaurant also gets kudos for the most delicious food.

We decided to stop at this restaurant today because my wife saw it on a previous drive through grates Cove. We were a bit thrown off at entering through a door at the lower level and finding ourselves in a craft Studios shop and having to have the very pleasant girl there explain to us where the restaurant was and how it worked.

We were seated at the upstairs area that serves as a restaurant. While it is new it definitely needs some work it was not a restaurant like atmosphere simply a sunroom with some tables and chairs and really nothing else except a very large extension cord on the floor. We do however like small restaurants and don't really mind that kind of atmosphere if there's something special about it. The view was very nice.

I had the dirty rice with calamari. I was enjoying it tremendously although it is very overpriced at $26 and I was willing to overlook that until the very large hair I found in my food. I didn't have the heart to tell the server didn't want conflict so I said nothing. But it did leave a bad taste in my mouth.

My wife had the lobster pizza and while it was pretty good it was served on too small of a plate and had very thick doughy crust which was too much for that kind of pizza. That was around 22 or $23. Again overpriced.

Our total bill for the two meals and three glasses of cola was about $67. This is really far too much for a restaurant in this area at this level. I don't think we'll be going back.

There are too many competing interests at this business. A craft shop a studio and a restaurant and selling facial creams. The restaurant seems like an afterthought in many respects. They have a very long way to go to make this a place that anyone would visit more than once.

We enjoyed our stay, and getting to know Terrence and Courtney, the owners of the studios. They were helpful in giving us information on the area and surroundings. Unfortunately we could only stay a short time.

Room tip: the front room with a view, back room side view, kitchen and dining room has big windows overlooking the ocean
