“Great Design, Beautiful Ocean Views, Poor restaurant Service”
Reviewed 27 April 2012

I arrived to the Tides with My mother & Husband Last Week. Upon Arrival we decided to enjoy the Hotels lunch Menu Before checking in Since we had extra time to waste before Check-in. The Restaurant is Beautiful. However The Service is not. We had A waiter Named Brandon I figured that out because I had to ask him for his name three times before he spoke up loud enough that we could hear it. He was very rude cold and unwelcoming and disappeared for long periods of time. My mother likes to say she received better treatment during the Holocaust . We checked into the hotel following lunch service and that was almost a smooth process. I wanted to take my mother and husband to a few nice restaurants while in Miami and the Hotels personal assistant suggested restaurants that were terrible.(obvious that he never had a meal there)The rooms were big and very elegant, and everything was clean.
What really turned the trip around for me and my family was meeting the personal assistant guys on the night shift. Brent & Miguel They were dressed extremely nice in there shirts and ties & Are extremely courteous. Brent waited on us hand and foot while we were there. He is the nicest guy.My mother commented the whole trip on how attractive he was.(She's 65 years old LOL) He suggested restaurants for me and my family that were outstanding! We will always remember service like that! They gave us directions told us about interesting places to go and things to do. They completely changed my view of the hotel staff I will stay at the tides again but I'm checking in at night. They really made an impression on us. This is a place that you will enjoy & you now have a new frequent visitor. Thanks for everything. It was Wonderful.

Room Tip: Anything Above the 6th Floor is a Better View I noticed

Thank you for your authentic comments.

My sincerest apologies for the lack of attentive and gracioius service upon arrival by Brandon and by the personal assistant. I am so sorry your stay started as such, but delighted to hear about the rest of your stay and experience with Brent and Miguel, our overnight team.

Looking forward to your return visit to us.

I had a great stay in January for three nights. Truly relaxing.

Walking into the lobby, you immediately notice the subdued earth-toned decor rich in texture and the perfect mix of scale. Nothing about this place says "corporate/group meeting hotel". I arrived early and the front desk could not have been more accommodating and friendly.

My room was on the sixth floor and very large. Upon walking in, it is a long corridor leading to the bed area. First, on my left, I had a well-appointed walk-in closet with safe and coffee machine. Then, further down the hall, a big bathroom with deep tub/shower combo and generous sink. The bedroom area is very spacious with a sofa/coffee table set-up closest to the window.

The view of the beach is so nice - looking out onto the bustle of Ocean Drive and the palm trees and tons of blue ocean. Staying on Ocean Drive, you have to accept there is going to be noise. For the tradeoff though, you can walk to everything: beach, shops, restaurants. The nightly party next door is loud, but it ended every night around 10:00pm.

In the morning, they set up a very nice coffee station in the lobby. Generic pastry/muffin plate, some whole fruit and coffee/tea. As I'm an early-riser, it was nice to be able to grab a cup of coffee before my boyfriend woke up and we went to breakfast later in the morning. Had room service a couple of times, all delicious and well-prepared.

Sat by the pool one afternoon and it was quite empty which was fine for me. There is poolside drink service, which is all that I needed. Another day I went to the beach and the hotel has complimentary chair/umbrella service for their guests with one of the places right across the street. Service was easy and more than adequate. Only wish that we could order drinks/food, but not a big deal.

I had a wonderfully relaxing stay and would recommend to anyone who wants a grown-up atmosphere on South Beach.

Room Tip: The higher you are, the further from the party noise.

After a long haul flight from London we were greeted with lovely smiles from the happy and efficient staff and a lovely welcome cocktail. Our corner bedroom was large, bright and nicely appointed with lovely views over the beach, the ocean and beautiful sunsets. The bathroom was large and kept in style (larger bath towels would be welcome) and the walk-in wardrobe so practical. Breakfast choices were good and tasty. Dinners too were very nice and served with a smile. Definitely one of the best if not the best hotel in South Beach but the price does reflects that.
We would come back and definitely recommend the place!

Room Tip: Any room finishing with 01.

We booked the Tides South Beach after reading a write-up in a Wallpaper Travel Guide.

The hotel is located far enough up South Beach to be away from the tacky sea front restaurants and bars, yet close enough to walk back to after a night out.

The front is a huge stepped terrace, with smart seating and sun shades. Staff in white shirts buzz around, tending to guests and replenishing drinks. It feels special.

We were checked in in our actual room. The girl on the front desk came up with us, closely followed by two complimentary house cocktails. The room was a standard ocean view double, but it felt more like a suite. All marble and natural fabrics and a high, ceiling with exposed beams. Massive, plush bed. Walk-in wardrobe/dressing room. Large sofa and armchair. And as for the view ... incomparable.

A walk from our room to the sea was under 10 minutes.

The room came with a daily breakfast of limitless fresh fruit, yoghurts, pastries, coffee, teas, mineral water. We had this sitting out on the front terrace, watching Miami wake up. One we were there and a shower rolled over. Without a word, umbrellas were brought out to us so we wouldn't get wet when we walked back to the hotel. Another time we expressed an interest in a day trip to the Everglades. We were wary of the kiosk sales guys doing excursions. The hotel organised a trip for us, for less than the kiosk guy's rate and charged it to our room. We we waited out front to be picked up, a member of staff chatted with us and then went and got us bottles of water for our trip. The service was understated and faultless. And the staff all had a great memory for faces. They greeted us as guest all the time.

The Tides has a lovely, medium size pool for guest and they serve delicious bar food there. There is also a huge roof terrace.

The hotel isn't showy or glitzy, but it has real style. I can't wait stay with them again.

Room Tip: It's worth paying extra for a higher floor ocean view room and sleeping with the window open so...

I would never choose to stay at South Beach for its trashiness and party noise. But since I was forced to, I was very glad it was the Tides Hotel that we chose in this touristy area, surrounded by beautiful art deco buildings.
The hotel is quiet, thank god, even though the next door restaurant tries to destroy the piece at all times of the day. Lobby is very pretty (this is an iconic deco building), room big with a walk-in closet (very nice) and the pool is small but secluded. I used it only in the dusk and had it all to myself. Internet connection was wireless, free and slow.
All the luxury and amenities are what you would expect for the very steep price you pay, and unfortunately it just seems that the whole area is a rip-off town but the Tides is the lesser of the evil.

From the moment you are welcomed to the Tides, given a cocktail and introduced to your concierge, you are made to feel special. The staff are simply superb and greet you by name everyday! The location, across the road from the beach, ensures stunning views of the ocean. The hotel and the rooms are beautifully appointed with eclectic furniture - a modern take on the art deco period, in keeping with its art deco heritage. We had an oceanfront studio suite which was large, with a walk in closet and marble bathroom. Drinks in the Coral Bar, a red leather sanctuary or on the Terrace watching the passing parade were most enjoyable. The pool was nicely secluded behind the hotel and a good size.Compared to the other restaurants on Ocean Drive, the restaurant was a haven. Some noise (hooting and hollering)carried from the drag show in the hotel next door one night, but it did not carry on past a respectable hour. We never wanted to leave and have no hesitation in believing it is the best hotel in South Beach.

Could not think of anything negative. At all. Super attentive staff and always wanting to please and go the extra mile. Good views. Good location. Just great. High floor views great. Very spacious rooms. Amenities ok. After a long haul flight it was refreshing to check in calmly with no problems or comments.
