“Excellent for wildlife”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

Our 8 mile roundtrip hike on the Cone's Dike trail felt almost like a safari. We saw so much wildlife on this trip! At the entrance of the park, we saw four turkeys--a male and three females. On the trail we saw wild horses. Apparently it is also possible to see bison here. Additionally, we must have seen two dozen alligators. Then, on the way back, sprawled out in the trail we saw a large cottonmouth snake. Yikes!

I am eager to return to this area. It was a great hike, but be prepared if you hike on the Cone's Dike trail or the La Chua trail in the prairie that there is quite a lot of sun exposure. I just wore a hat and a lightweight long sleeve shirt. Bring lots of water if you are hiking.

I am eager to return to this place to see the wetland grass area when there is more water (with the recent drought a lot of the wetland area was dry). Also I would like to go on the La Chua trail which goes deeper into the prairie.

Another interesting fact about this park is that it is maintained according to the historical record left by naturalist William Bartram who traveled through the area in (I don't remember which) the 1700's or 1800's.

“Home on the range”

Loved the visitor's center and learned quite a bit about the local flora and fauna. Enjoyed a 1/2 mile walk to the observation tower.

The four mile trail is one-way which equals eight. A GREAT hike. Be comfortable, sunscreen, hat & lots of water!

“A Prairie in Florida!”

Strange phenomenon that has been brought back to prehistoric conditions with wild horses, bison, wild cattle, and loads of native birds.
