Holiday Inn & Suites Across from Universal Orlando

A friend and I got a great deal on Priceline for this hotel. I was a little worried based on some unfavorable reviews. The hotel was very good. In fact it was a pleasant surprise. The lobby is nice and large with a Universal employee on staff to assist. The check in staff was pleasant and efficient. The room was very clean and updated. We asked for more towels and received them. There were pillows labeled both soft and firm which was nice. I didn't think we'd have a refrigerator or coffee maker, and we had both! Now for the downside, the thermostat didn't work but that wasn't a huge a problem since we didn't need to turn it on much. Neither of us was brave enough to cross 6 lanes of traffic to walk to Universal even though there is a light to cross. Although the parking deck was across Kirkman from the hotel, it was still a fairly decent walk. If saving $15 counts more than your feet, it is doable. Basically a good value in a great location and this is totally a favorable review.

Room Tip: This was a three star on Priceline

If you are going to Universal Studio's stay here - just avoid the rooms in the "suite" tower that are close to the top and end, ie xxx30- there is a huge air conditioning unit on the roof that makes the whole place vibrate and shake and you can't sleep

the tgif friday's on the same property has a good happy hour.

Room Tip: NOT a room in the suite tower ending with xxxx30 on a high floor , the ac noise is really bad

My husband and I go to Orlando frequently. We have stayed at several hotels in the area. This was the by far the worse one. I have never written a review, but the treatment by staff has forced me to do so. First the hotel was dirty. The TV remote did not work. There was no hot water. I do not enjoy cold showers. To top it off I left my phone charger in the room, becauseI was so anxious to leave and take a shower. It took 2 days and several phone calls to get someone to talk to me. I even tried asking for the manager but she only transfered the call to a answering machine. Finally the said they had it and they would mail it to me if I gave them my credit card information.

Have always stayed at Holiday Inn's and have never been disappointed and again were not. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable with regards to helping us get around Orlando. As I checked into the hotel, the Universal Staff were explaining to my husband how and where to get the free shuttle to the Studios. The hotel lobby was light and airy with plenty of places to sit. The room we were given was nice and large, very clean and modern. Even though the hotel did not offer breakfast, TGI Friday with access through the hotel, was open early for breakfast. If you don't want to take the shuttle to Universal you can walk there in 15 minutes.

Good location for Universal Studios but the hotel itself could use up to date remodeling. The lobby area had several incidences that brought alarm to our family's safety including a formal police arrest of a gun carrying man. There is also two reserved parking spots clearly labeled for the Orlando Police Department implying frequent visitation.

The swimming pools are misrepresented in the website photos. They are much smaller, are not connected, and there is no indoor pool.

One positive note is that the on site Universal Studio representative did a great job informing us of our many options and arranged for transportation to the parks.

We stayed in a suite which had two bedrooms and a common room. The floor plan accommodates to families easily. The restaurant provides a coupon for kids to eat free with purchase of adult meal providing the coupon is picked up at the front hotel desk before each meal.

Depending on the hour the restaurant itself attracts questionable clientele.

Great location we were able to walk to universal studios. Only down side is they didn't have a airport shuttle but other than that everything was nice. The suites were a decent size it was able to sleep 5ppl. It didn't have breakfast but it was close to several restaurants. Front desk is also helpful. We never had any issues.

The only reason we ended up in Orlando (as part of our skiing holiday in Canada!) was the fact that we have 2 Harry Potter obsessed teenage daughters. I chose this Holiday Inn because, apart from the expensive hotels within Universal Studios, it was the closest I could see to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It turned out to be a good choice.
Staff at the hotel sold us tickets for the park the night before and we were very glad we took up their recommendation for a Fast Pass (even though you can't use this on the main HP feature, it was well worth it for fast access to other rides at Islands of Adventure.)
It was an easy 10 minute walk over to Universal and we got in at opening at 9am before any great queues had built up for Hogwart's Castle.
Apart from the location being great for Universal, the hotel itself was very good. We had a 2br unit which also had 2 bathrooms which was a bonus. Also big TVs in both bedrooms as well as the living room. Although the carpets in the hallways and lifts were somewhat tired and grubby looking, the suite itself was very clean. (My husband just reminded me that it did have a bit of a bad smell when you first came in...I'd forgotten about that!) The beds had the extra snuggly things on top of the mattress and were just about the most comfortable beds I had ever slept in. It was extremely quiet and peaceful at night.
The TGI Fridays was attached to the hotel and the dinners there were reasonably priced and yummy. The buffet breakfast was a bit ordinary. There were some positives like the selection of fresh fruits but the hot stuff like the eggs and troughs of sauces or gravies or whatever they were looked quite gross.
There was a stop for the International Drive Trolley Bus just outside the hotel and that was handy when we took a day off the Parks and went to look at some of the outlet malls. There was also an Orlando information and ticket booking agency across the road if you needed something the hotel couldn't help you with.
We did spend a day at Disney's Magic Kingdom. That was a fair way in a taxi from the hotel but we had expected that so weren't disappointed. The hotel is best suited if stuff at Universal is your main focus.
We had to catch an early flight on the day we left and staff at reception booked us a cab which was there waiting for us at 4.30am but the girl on the desk that morning never gave us the early wake up call we had requested. Just as well we use a couple of back up alarms!
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was pretty amazing and the Holiday Inn was comfortable, convenient and good value.
