Savannas State Park allows a visitor to step back in time and see this coastal area of Florida as it was years ago prior to all the development.

We did not have a lot of time to spend at the park, but we were able to take a walk on an easy, flat, sandy trail for about two hours. Parts of the trail skirt residential areas and roads, but it is still remarkably quiet. There are wildlife observation platforms and bridges that provide pleasant views. We saw other visitors on bikes, and there is a platform that allows canoe and kayak access.

During our walk, we enjoyed learning more about the characteristics of savannas and identifying the flowers, trees, plants, animals, and shrubs characteristic of the region.

A highlight for us was seeing sandhill cranes, a first we could record on our birding list.

The employees and volunteers at the visitor center, which had some displays to help hikers interpret what they would see on the trails, were pleasant, helpful, and knowledgeable.

There is plenty of parking and clean restrooms.

We stopped during part of an impropmtu road trip. Since we were nearing the end of our trip, we didn't have enough time to enjoy entire facility & grounds. The rangers/staff were EXTREMELY helpful and friendly. Were directed to experience Hawk's Bluff hiking trail, just a short drive away at Jensen Beach.

My wife and I went to the area off of Walton Road initially and hiked the shorter trail as my wife was having foot problems. February was a dry month, good for trail conditions, but we didn't see much but the local plant life. We later went to the campground off Midway Road and saw a few ducks and an Egret.
