I’ve stayed in many a Hilton and Ritz Carlton when on a destination vacation or when lodging in a large city.

But when I’m on a long road trip, I just want a clean comfortable low-budget motel to spend the night. That usually means Motel 6, Super 8, Red Roof Inn, and the like. Unfortunately, from location to location they can be drastically inconsistent, sometimes frighteningly so.

This motel is the cream of the crop when it comes to that type of lodging. Management and staff seem to take every detail seriously, including friendliness and helpful customer service. The motel itself looks like a typical kitchy 1950s Florida motel. Everything here is clean, odor free, and reflects the attention to detail I wish all low-budget motels aspired to. Even the typical motel hot breakfast is a cut above most!

Plus you are close enough to the historic district of Saint Augustine to easily enjoy it without breaking your budget.

From the moment Yovani checked us in until check-out, I knew we had found a reasonably priced motel worth sharing with TripAdvisor reviewers.

If you’re cost-conscious but demand cleanliness and comfort, Smart Stay can’t be beat.

Excellent customer services. The Office staff was professional and really cared about our needs; breakfast was good, but seating is limited. Great Waffles, eggs, sausage and loads of other items as well; clean rooms and quiet/safe accommodations. Beds were VERY comfortable! Did I mention EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!

It's too bad I did not heed the warning from another Reviewing Traveler that advised everyone, "Don't waste your time attempting to have the free breakfast at the Hotel as the seating was horrid." The Breakfast Dining area presently is located in the Main Lobby of the Hotel. The size of the entire area is approx. 15' x 15' if that. (Efforts are being made to renovate the Lobby and Dining area, but several months away.) Presently, there are maybe six small, 4-topper tables and I believe, 1 "high boy" two-seater to sit at to "eat" your breakfast. Consider this... Approx. 150+ rooms and a Breakfast Dining area to adequately "seat" 26 people?! Every morning I had to finagle my way to the coffee just to get coffee. The set up for the breakfast is quite impressive particularly in such a small area and the staff did a Hell'uva job attempting to accommodate "partakers," but the free breakfast was far and away as accommodating as we are used to @ the Hampton or Holiday Inn(s). The room was O.K. at Best. The folks generally rating and reviewing this Hotel are more than likely either small families, Contractors In the Area and long distance truck drivers, who stay in the hotel like it's an Efficiency since each room has a small refrigerator and microwave. The outside or hallway trash containers were more than "overflowing" with trash each morning we left to go elsewhere for Breakfast. ( I've got pictures) This Hotel is a renovated early '70's era Holiday Inn or HoJo hotel so you can take it from there. There is no signage for the main Entrance to access the Hotel. After 3 complete, ROUNDTRIP "passes," we finally figured out How to get to the Hotel by driving between the Shell & Chevron gas stations. There are absolutely No markings along the highway by which to direct patrons to the Hotel. It's simply a "hit or miss" effort as simple as that. HIGHLY, HIGHLY OVERRATED!!!!! BEWARE!

Room tip: Go E to the Holiday Inn Express or 1/3 mile west of the Interstate to the Hampton Inn. You'll be much "happier."

Dear BubbyPlantCity,

Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to review our property during your most recent stay with us.

We apologize that you were not able to enjoy your recent stay with us, our entire staff works hard to keep the property clean and be as accommodating as we can for our guest's. I am sorry this was not accomplished during your stay, but to be clear we are an economy hotel and not a Hampton Inn. Our prices generally range between $70-$120 which is not priced like a Hampton($120-$250) either. We have higher online ratings due to the recent renovations and the services that we provide at a discounted price. Our lobby is 26x25 which yes is smaller than needed but the addition set to be completed by the end of January(not "several months") will add 384 sq ft. and should be more than adequate. Thank you for complimenting our staff on doing the best they could with a smaller breakfast area. Although we do not appreciate your assumption that only truckers and contractors rate our hotel as this is false and we do not appreciate our clientele being marginalized to make a point.

As far as our signage we are still working with the city to get approval for a monument sign( they have not allowed thus far) and apologize for any difficulty finding our hotel. We are not by any means over rated, we are a clean economy hotel that provides good service for the price paid for a room. As you said you are used to Hampton and Holiday Inn which offer a higher level of service at a higher price point. We wish you the best in your future travels and hope you have better experiences elsewhere.

Sincerely,

The smartstay inn is a perfect place to stay for a relaxing vacation. The complementary breakfast was delicious. The hotel was very clean and all the employees were nice and helpful. They even recommended us to go see the nights of lights, which was an amazing event that's going on. Overall I had an incredible experience here.
