A quiet stop during our cruise

Review of Spanish Cay
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 6, 2019
I immediately felt like I was in the Bahamas that I experienced as a charter captain 35 years ago. The small marina is well maintained and has recovered from recent storms. Friendly staff who were very helpful. The cracked conch for dinner was perfect. Nice swimming pool and showers. They charge $10 per day for WiFi. We cleared immigration and customs here upon our arrival from Florida - easy, peasy.

The marina is very nice and perfectly adequate for anything u need as a boater. One of the interesting thing is all the variety and size of sharks cruising the marina. The restaurant is not fancy but the food is off the chart delicious, and home made. I always make a point of staying here when I’m in the abacos. All the staff are nice, friendly, and happy to be here. Kristin was delightful!

Arrived by yacht from Old Bahamas Bay. I thought that was average until we arrived here, Okay dock - non floating - one restaurant and bar (wreckers bar has since been closed due to damage from storms) not much to do in the island. If you're super casual they do have hotel.cottages, a pool, a bar, etc. but this was definitely just a stop over for us to continue our voyage the next day. not what it used to be from what I've heard. Dinner at the bar was not bad and we had a good time with the bar games they had - ping pong and such.

We stopped to check in with Customs, refuel and take advantage of the facilities and a little time off the sail boat! Felix, the dock master, was so nice and welcoming. We really appreciated his friendliness and sharing information about the island. It was great to have a customs official on site so we could get checked in after our sail from US. It was off season, so it was like we had the island to ourselves. There is a nice little store where you can buy groceries from a limited selection. Prices are high on some items but on some, they are pretty reasonable. I bought a great hat with sun shield in the back with the Spanish Cay logo for $30. We didn't need the restaurant so I can't rate that. There is a nice little pool with pool furniture and small thatched roof swings and tables located around the grounds. Kind of reminds me of Gilligan's Island.
We enjoyed an afternoon of walking on the quiet beaches and then did our laundry in the evening. Everyone we met (maintenance, Felix, painter, etc.) was very friendly. I imagine it would be a fun place to visit in the "on" season.

Room tip: Didn't stay in a room.

Nothing fancy but a wonderful out Island experience. Quiet and relaxing. Nice walks, nice beaches. Usually a few interesting boats in the marina. Single restaurant bar where everyone can meet in the evenings. So informal and pleasant.
