My husband and I spent our anniversary weekend at the Home Hotel in July 2011. We stayed two nights. The staff at the Hotel were AWESOME! They were very understanding when we called to push back our check in time, and very helpful in giving us directions when we got lost. The room was very nice, the air conditioner kept the room cool, and the beds were very comfy. What impressed me the absolute most was the chocolate bar and chilled sparkling cider, complete with glasses, waiting for us on the table when we opened the room (and it wasn't my husband's idea.) Thank you again, Home Hotel for making our stay special! We will be back to stay again.

The hot springs are such a great little weekend trip! The Home Hotel is our favorite by far. The town is very small, and it's right in the middle of everything! Steps from the restaurants, hot pools, and the only bar in town.

We got the Picasso suite #446. The bed was comfortable, the tub was HUGE, and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Huge props to these guys, we will definitely be back!

Room Tip: The refurbished rooms are worth it! But all of them are comfortable. :)

The rental house at Home Hotel is only steps away from the spring, and is the best way to spend a few days in Lava. For less money than we paid previously for a small and rather worn down double-queen room elsewhere in Lava last year we stayed in a large, comfortable two-bedroom guest house!

The queen beds seemed new and were very comfortable, with nice bedding and pillows.

The full kitchen was nicely equipped with everything we needed to make all our family meals (and by that I mean cookware that was a pleasure to work with, not flimsy thrift store pots). Coffee filters, a few herbs and spices -- those little things you don't want to buy when you are only in town a few days -- were already provided. And when I realized I needed aluminum foil, the desk clerk at the hotel next door kindly ran to the supply room and gave me some.

The kids loved the 42" flat screen tv and the yard (a rarity for us San Franciscans) and my daughter found the day bed in the living room very comfortable since she decided she had outgrown bunking down with her baby brother.

Unlike other guest houses I have rented, this came with full maid service -- another real bargain.

The owners were wonderful, and nice hot coffee was always available in the lobby of the main hotel.

Also worth mentioning is the spa tub -- an enormous, double-size tub that actually pumps water direct from the hot spring into the house. What a treat!

And finally, when my husband left several pairs of socks behind, they shipped them to us at their own expense. That is real service.

We spent three days at the guest house at Home Hotel and will definitely be back. Our family looks forward all year to spending a few winter days enjoying the hot springs in Lava and from now on we intend to spend them staying at the guest house at Home Hotel.

Room Tip: The guest house is 15 yards from the spring and an excellent value for families.

Last weekend my wife and I enjoyed a two-night midwinter stay at this hotel. It went exactly as we had hoped -- excellent accommodations including an in-room hot tub, comfortable king bed, flat screen TV, two bedside reading lamps, minifridge, micro, wifi, etc. Scott, the British-born owner, has done a great job renovating this 91 year old hotel, giving it much attention to detail and nice touches. The people at the front desk were always friendly and helpful. There was always fresh coffee in the lobby -- a welcome extra in the dead of winter.

The hotel's location is perfect -- only a half-block walk to the public pools (which, btw, are outstanding!)

Other reviews of Lava hotels, including this one, have complained about the noise created by trains passing nearby during the night. In our case we could hardly hear the trains at all, perhaps because it being wintertime we had the windows closed.

Be forewarned about the restaurants in Lava: They are all mediocre at best. In fact, after sampling them all, we decided not to waste our money and chose to have our second-night dinner in our room, using the microwave to heat a frozen Hungry Man dinner from tjhe local supermarket.

Most of the hotels and motels in lava are on the "dumpy" and "out-of-date" side. Especially the ones in town close enough to walk to the main hot springs. Home Hotel is an old hotel that has been renovated and has some small old-school rooms in nearby buildings.

Definitely go for the renovated rooms named after a specific artist in the old part of the hotel. The rooms are small due to the age of the property but the renovations are nice and personally I kind of dig on the smaller rooms in an old building like that.

For the money, I think it is the best place to stay in Lava Hot Springs.

Room Tip: The Gustav Klimt room on the second floor is pretty quiet for being in downtown Lava.

We enjoyed a one-night stay at the Home Hotel. We got a free upgrade without asking, and found the room very pleasant, and the staff very easy to work with. The shower struggled a little to function properly, but otherwise, we had no complaints. The owner manager (during the day) was very friendly, and the evening help was also very helpful.

This is a great little hotel. The beds are comfortable, the staff are friendly and the bathtubs are absolutely massive. You could easily fit four people in one, if you wanted to. It is also a great price, and it cost less to stay here for two nights than most four star places in the city we came from.

One thing, though: it is loud. This isn't the staff's fault, as the place is kind of old and the walls are a little thin. Plus, there is a train that runs right by, but that will happen anywhere you are in Lava Hot Springs. So bring a set of earplugs, and otherwise settle in for a fun stay.

Room Tip: We have the Van Gogh room, but in the end it doesn't matter much. They are all about the same.
