We arrived to Union Station via BNSF rail and took bus 151 to Michigan and Ontario. We made the short walk to the hotel. It was early, 10am, so we dropped our bag with the friendly bell staff (they also man the front door, greeting you) and headed out for the day. We got back at 130pm, well before the 3pm check-in, and the room still wasn't ready. Jackie at the front desk asked if she could call us when it was ready, so we went around the corner for a quick lunch. Twenty minutes later she called and we went back and checked in. We had a corner room on the top floor. We heard the elevator mechanics now and again, but had a great view of the Hancock, just outside our window. Speaking of the Hancock, the hotel can be seen from the Hancock observation deck out of the south side windows, if you stand in the southwest part of the floor. Look down and to the right.
The rooms are small, but, by the standards of most European hotels, and hotels in other parts of the world, this was fine. It was clean and the beds were comfortable and the desk was big enough to be used for business. Wifi was free but not super quick. Good enough for email and basic web browsing.
There is no hotel restaurant or bar, but plenty are nearby. Breakfast buffet is the typical H.I. Express, so we hit the Starbucks across the street for coffee, and the E Leaven around the corner for a light breakfast. The elevators can get busy at peak times, but this is a vintage property so it's expected. We've stayed at a lot of downtown hotels in Chicago, and now have an idea of which one we'd pick for which occasion. A big thumbs-up to the desk staff and bell-staff. They were tops as far as we've seen in the city.
