“The hotel reception clerk, Antonio, was an idiot.”
Reviewed 22 March 2012

First off, I'd like to say the actual hotel was nice and our room had a great view. Unfortunately, it was slightly offset by the stupid idiot that checked us in, Antonio. Let's see, where to begin...First of all, I don't think he was even qualified to work the check-in. He came out of the back room and noticed that the line was getting long so decided this was his big chance to impress the bosses and waved us over for check-in assistance. He did alright for the first couple minutes...took our names down and entered them into the system well enough. However, that's about all he did right. Our Priceline package was paid in full and included free parking. When we mentioned this, Antonio was quick to tell us that the hotel didn't offer free parking and that there would be an additional fee. As this was going on, I interjected to ask what floor we'd be on as my husband and I were both hoping for something near the top for the view. He said we'd be on the 7th floor. My husband then asked if we would be able to pay more for a room on one of the top floors...anything from 20 up would have been great. Once again, Antonio the idiot was quick to say this wasn't possible but for a $30 fee, we could have a city view on the 7th floor....big whoop. When we asked why we weren't allowed anything higher than that, he explained that there were people in this weekend taking an exam and that the hotel wanted to give them a quiet area in which to study while keeping the noisier people for St. Patrick's Day weekend separated. This sounded like an alright excuse but were they really blocking 25 floors just for this? At this point he was of no help and we were losing patience so he went to the back and brought out his manager. As she walked out, she looked at us and shook her head as if to say, "I'm sorry you have to deal with this guy." His manager, Louise, quickly looked up our reservation, confirmed we did indeed have free parking and gave us our room cards so we could be on our way. So, off we go to the 7th floor with a room card that says 3223. Odd, I thought, wouldn't the numbers be in the 700's if our room was on the 7th floor? Oh well, surely Antonio isn't stupid enough to send us to the wrong floor, right? Nope, he was. After briefly stepping off on the 7th floor, we realized we had to be in the wrong place and went back down to inquire. By this time, they'd moved Antonio to the help desk where he could tell people that Chicago doesn't have a Shedd Aquarium or Field Museum. The lady working the check-in told us that we were actually on the 32nd floor! So, to wrap up, the rest of the trip was great. We had an amazing view and a really nice time. But, the story wouldn't be complete without finding out a couple days later that Hyatt charged my credit card for the room even though we'd already paid on Priceline. I blame Antonio. I'm sure he's behind this in some way. Anyway, they've refunded the double charge and that'll probably be the last time we visit that hotel.

Dear Tiffany S,

I'm so very sorry to read about your check in experience! I can imagine your frustration. I'm glad that Louise took care of you and got you in an upgraded city view room on the 32nd floor. I also apologize for the accidental double charge, but I'm happy to hear that it's been refunded. We will address these issues with the front desk and ensure that all of our staff behind the desk are properly trained to assist our guests up to the Hyatt standard. I do hope that you will allow us another chance to show you the level of service of which we are capable.

Best regards,

Wife and I escaped to Chicago. Planned trip last minute, so closer, affordable hotels were booked. Got a good value. Room was clean, pleasant, enjoyed the shower and soaps. Nice view on the 28th floor. Staff was professional beginning to end, parking was easy. Grabbing taxis was super easy and less than $15 everytime (Shedd, museums under $10). No internet, we used our smartphones-no big deal. We had a few beers and a woodfired margherita pizza in lounge evening we arrived- other travellers were enjoying themselves, vibe was fine and wife liked pizza. Staff down to earth and nice that eve.

Enjoyed a quiet dip in pool early one morning, made wife happy.

Sunjday morning we left we had breakfast bar- it was nice, not super variety, but nice quality stuff for $19. The staff was really great. Brought us tasty homemade salsas for our omelettes, coffee in press was good, fruit was good.

The Hyatt-Regency contributed to our enjoyment of weekend.

Dear Tom S,

It sounds like you and your wife enjoyed a nice mini-getaway! A tip for next time, try the #3 CTA bus. It stops right in front of the hotel and will take you to the Loop, the Magnificent Mile, Millenium Park, and within a couple blocks of Musuem's Campus. It's also a nice 1 mile walk by Soldier Field to Museum's Campus. Thank you for staying with us and for sharing your experience with TripAdvisor readers. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future!

I'll be honest, this is probably the first and last time I'm writing a review. The Hyatt McCormick Place has moved me enough to do so. They've got a monopoly on the convention center and they know it. Prices are exorbitant and what you get for it is sorely lacking. The rooms are a completely disgrace to any Hyatt. Twice I've stayed here and twice the sheets in a new room showed stains. They were fresh sheets all pressed and tight but there were brown stains on the edges. The bathrooms are quite the joke, a cube like relic from the 90s that can barely fit a toilet let alone a bath. The shower lets out a high pitched whine every time you turn it on and the shower curtains aren't long enough to cover the entire bath and you almost always end up with a wet bathroom floor. The vanity fixtures are dated and barely functional. Even the closet is just a curtain drawn across a small cutout space.

The absolute worst part is the noise. The walls are paper thin. You here both adjacent rooms at the same time. It's not just a dull muffle, its full on conversations and even cell phones on vibrate. That is just downright ridiculous. Whenever a door shuts 5 rooms away, you get jolted up in the middle of the night. I'm not a light sleeper but this hotel design is a joke. And by the way, you can pay an upcharge for fridge in your room. Seriously???

Unless you absolutely have no choice or just like to suffer, stay far far away from this dump. Great service staff though. Nice, polite and almost apologetic knowing that you got suckered.

Room Tip: Any room except a room at the Hyatt.

The restaurant at the hotel is just ok but has been understaffed for years now. Not enough waiters which makes the service very slow. The bar is also very expensive and understaffed.

The room are nice and clean but the internet is slow. It takes 4 seconds to change the channel on the tv with the remote and it gets annoying fast.

If you are an early riser wake up 10 minutes before and turn on the hot water.

Gym is nice with good equipment.

To get to restaurants in the heart of the city you need to take a cab. During trade shows the cab line starts at 530pm and lasts to 8pm. If you don't have a limo lined up you can wait as long as an hour for a cab.

Dear DMACK15,

I'm very sorry for the inconveniences you described in your review! I am sharing your feedback with the Restaurant Manager regarding the staff and the Engineering Manager for issues with the Internet, remote control, and the hot water. Another tip to avoid the cab lines is the #3 CTA bus which stops right in front of the hotel and runs up Michigan Ave to the Loop and the Magnificent Mile. Thank you for staying with us, and I'm sorry again for the troubles you experienced!

We were working the Feb auto show convention and stayed here two weeks. From the warm welcome at front desk, to the management, bell staff, engineer, room service, housekeeping, everything was just wonderful. We stay in hotels a lot because Of the Auto shows, other hotels can learn a lot from the Hyatt! This was an extremely pleasant stay, I have high standards, used to be front office manager in Los Angeles.

To be sure, there’s no reason to stay at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, lest you have some sort of business at the convention center, and you want to be close to the reveling conventioneers. Really. The hotel is in many ways, quite nice, but there are better choices for anyone wishing to enjoy Chicago outside the trade show du jour.

But in case you’re curious, or have set your sights on the next Boat and RV show… You will find the rooms have great views. You will also find the parking to be expensive. You’ll note the delightfully comfortable beds. You’ll also wonder inquisitively at the ludicrous bathroom design. It won’t bother you, but you’ll ponder the reasoning. You’ll doubtless come across some very happy (AKA plastered) middle-age party-goers, thrilled to be in the Windy City for work, in the hopping bar, and the elevator, and the lobby, and the halls…

BUT MOST OF ALL, you’ll notice that you’re staying in what appears to be a shopping Mall or airport. Stores. Starbucks. Vacuous spaces with vending machines selling things that should be free. And mall music. Mall music. Everywhere.

Would I return? Well, were I to be an invitee at the Belt and Accessories Fair or keynote speaker at the International Pipe Fitter’s conference, then maybe. Actually, no. Even then, I’d stay uptown and take a cab.

Room Tip: High floor

Overall a nice hotel -- attractive, spacious, clean, extremely convenient location for McCormick Place.

Unfortunately, our room was noisy due to an apparent wind tunnel-effect, which made sleeping difficult.

The bellhops and valets were friendly and helpful, and made our return trip to O'Hare very easy.
