Spent three nights at the InterContinental. Guest services were all excellent, from the doormen to the concierge and front desk staff. Our room was nicely sized, which is unusual in CHI. Beds and pillows were very comfy and we enjoyed the turn down and 'tidying' services.
We celebrated a birthday with a complimentary yummy cake.
Didn't get time to take the audio tour on the history of the hotel, but would have liked to!
Probably the only drawback was the plumbing and shower itself. Sink had a slow leak to the tile floor. The handheld shower head was somewhat small. It would be great to see the hotel refurbish the bathrooms.

What can I say... this USED to be our FAVORITE hotel in Chicago because of its location, its historic and gorgeous pool, it amazing Sunday brunch, it's relatively low price compared to comparable hotels, its exclusive benefits of the ambassador membership… All of the above has fallen disappointingly by the wayside with a resounding THUD. Let’s break it down:

Location: I’ll concede that it’s still great. Get a corner room in the Historic tower higher than the 20th floor with a view of Michigan Ave and/or the river.

Its historic and gorgeous pool: Closed indefinitely! When asked when it will re-open, the hotel staff actually said, “Maybe never.”

Its amazing Sunday brunch: Zest is gone, and his been replaced by a very dark Michael Jordan restaurant that takes up much of the lobby and second entrance. (The lobby, by the way, used to be beautiful and open with lots of places to sit. Also no longer...). The food is very bad. Very. Bad. There are so many restaurants in this city. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else to eat.

Its relatively low price compared to comparable hotels: Based on my review of everything else. Go to the Drake, or the Peninsula. Completely worth the extra money… That, or downgrade to the Hilton and get what you expect and pay for... The InterContinental has fallen so low that you pay a higher price than the Hilton, but you get a worse experience!

Its exclusive benefits of the ambassador membership: I canceled our membership after this disaster. Part of the membership includes early check-in (granted, when available)… but our room wasn’t ready until 6pm. This is obviously after normal check-in. The staff was overwhelmed, and not effective or helpful. I tried to speak with the manager about our room, waited in long line to speak with someone, only to be told that my husband needed to be with me because the membership was in his name.

In a nutshell. Go somewhere else.

ps: Go to Argo tea next door instead of the Starbucks in the hotel. Way better food and coffee.

Room Tip: Get a corner room in the Historic tower higher than the 20th floor with a view of Michigan Ave and/o...

Dear uxandcoffee,

Thank you for leaving us a review. I am deeply sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay or some of our new facilities. I am also concerned that you have canceled your Ambassador membership because of this experience. I would like to discuss this in further detail with you. I have sent you a private message to obtain additional detail regarding your stay. I trust we can regain your confidence in the InterContinental soon.

The location of this hotel is just perfect for visiting Chicago. Right on the Mag Mile, its just a short walk to Navy Pier, the John Hancock Observatory and of course shopping.
The hotel is typical of a 5 star hotel, however I was shocked to learn upon arrival that you need to pay to use the gym. Its $12 per day, or $60 for your entire stay. I must say I would have expected more from this class of hotel. Maybe it's because they are renovating the pool that you need to pay to use another gym facility near by, but no explanation was given.

Otherwise service is great, rooms are lovely and location very convenient.

I stayed at this hotel for a fun weekend with a far-away friend and I was very pleased with the experience.
I did have an issue after I booked, but before I arrived and the hotel staff was friendly, responsive and my concerns were resolved before we arrived. We stayed in a room in the Historic tower. This room was spacious with a seating area and a generous bathroom featuing a tub and a shower. The view was amazing! As others have mentioned, the location is hard to beat. (Also, there is a Trader Joe's right up the street to get snacks and treats for the room.)
All of our interactions with the staff were top notch. Professional and occasionally charming.
The history parts of the hotel are very cool, but hidden. I recommend taking a look at the second and third floor. This hotel would be so much better if there was a lobby or other casual common area in the historic part.
The two restaurants were not really inviting to just hang out and Starbucks is, well Starbucks. I think there is a hotel restaurant, but I wasn't really told about it and I'm not interested in breakfast at that price! The pool does look incredible and maybe the space I was looking for, but, alas, it was closed, awaiting inspection.

Pro:
Nice room, Super view, great service, location
Con:
Stuffy design, no lobby or common area, nickel and diming with the $3 bottles of water in the bathroom, etc.

We travel a lot and generally do not go first class. I do have to say I don't feel I have missed anything. This was a gift so cannot complain. The staff excelled. They really couldn't do enough to help you. Our room was nice but have had just as nice elsewhere at half the price.
It was clean and neat and would stay again. Don't bring a car and be prepared to pay for Internet.

This Hotel is conveniently located to the Metra and South Shore line, close to the river, shopping, Millenium Park and numerous Restaurants, all within walking distance. Very, very convenient to a lot of attractions. Loved the convenience.

We are members of the Ambassador rewards program and received an upgrade to a large, 2 room suite at check - in. Complimentary fruit bowl and bottled were delivered to us. The bedroom was big, comfy king size bed was perfect and furnishings well appointed - desk, bureau with flat screen TV. Free WiFi, as well informational computer provided (no internet unless you paid for it) Nicely renovated bathroom with separate shower and bath tub. No problems with water pressure even on a higher floor as mentioned in other reviews. Living room area was large with several windows over N. Michigan Ave. We were up on the 28th floor and during the day could hear sirens from street level, but it was quiet at night. This room would be useful for a longer business trip or a family needing the spread-out space. Bigger flat screen TV here. Furnishing in this room was a little drab. There was a second bathroom too!! All staff were helpful and the concierge reserved Architecture Boat tour for us. The ENO wine, cheese and chocolate bar in the hotel was a terrific and taste-y 'date night' evening. Recommended. PS. The pool is closed for re-furbishing, reopen date still TBD. Guests from Intercontinental can use the pool facilities across the street at the Marriott. We didn't.

Room Tip: Use concierge service for reservations.
