“You Just Have to Stay Here!”

More of a B&B than a motel, for a quick get away to Galena you can not beat this little place. We were very pleased with everything and can't wait to come back. Donna and Art are so welcoming. The room was so sweet, decorated with 1920's antiques, yet modern (all re-modeled) and cozy-comfortable. I wish we could have spent all summer based out of room #10. The beautiful rolling scenery in the back yard just adds to the peacefulness. We had a delicious steak dinner less in the town of Elizabeth than 5 minutes away at The Welcome Inn . We also had a few cocktails in town before heading back. Art had stoked up a warm campfilre for us to enjoy on the cool evening. What a wonderful wake up to have a tray of fresh brewed coffee and home made muffins delivered and silently left in the hall outside of our door. Stay here, avoid the crowds and commercial hotels, and drive to Galena about 10 scenic minutes away. You will feel like you are on a romantic get away to the countrside, exactly what we were hoping to find. Thanks Donna & Art we will see you agan soon!

Room Tip: Toured the kitchen unit very roomy with a great private deck off the back, would be good if you had...

My husband and I stayed there in October 2011 and were very comfortable. The warm muffins and coffee were an unexpected surprise. We got married in Galena in April 2012 and suggested the Marcotte family motel to our family coming in from out of town. They had a very pleasant stay and the owners were very accommodating. Thank you for helping to make the day special for our family. We plan on coming back to visit.

over labor day weekend, i decided i wanted to take myself on a little date/photo adventure a couple hours away from my home in chicago. i'd been meaning to visit the elizabeth/galena countryside, but most every place to stay in galena is a super expensive, fancy guest house/spa or b&b [which are awesome, but out of my price range, and honestly, more than i require]. i found marcotte's while looking for reasonably-priced places to stay in the area, and i'm so glad i did! after reading the reviews here, i called to book a room, and donna, one of the owners, was super friendly and helpful from the start! she even gave me her cell phone number in case i got lost on the way.

i can't say enough about how nice my time was there. for just over $60, i got a large, clean, and comfortable room with all the basic amenities [including wifi!], a campfire at night, a piping hot pot of coffee and fresh, homemade muffins in the morning, a nice conversation, and the feeling that i was staying with family [in the good way!]. marcotte's is very friendly and homey.

if i had to list anything as a con, the only thing i can really think of is that the walls are fairly thin, so you might be able to hear what your neighbors are up to. wasn't a huge problem, though. on the whole, the motel was very quiet!

donna gave me lots of recommendations about places to go and eat in the area, and if you head out this way, i would highly recommend having dinner at a little restaurant called "the holy mackerel", which is actually a converted church! oh, elizabeth, illinois, you are adorable. the food here was outstanding--i had a filet mignon, baked potato, and veggies, along with some really great soup and homemade mini croissants. super friendly service, too. and it's only a few minutes away from marcotte's!

[and on your way down 20 west, if you're coming from the chicago area, you'll pass through a few small towns before elizabeth--be sure to stop at the l.a. drive-in in stockton for a $1.00 ice cream cone the size of your head.]

the area itself is breathtaking. had i known that all of this beautiful farmland and rolling hills existed less than three hours from the city, i would have visited much sooner. looking forward to visiting in different seasons now! i had a wonderful time taking photos out there. and main street galena, only about 15-20 minutes west, is like stepping back in time. a ton of great restaurants and shops, antiques and artists, fancy bed and breakfasts, and just this really lovely old-timey feeling of community. i love living in the city, but man, this area makes country life pretty tempting.

all in all, if you're looking to spend a couple nice nights in this beautiful part of illinois without breaking the bank, consider marcotte's! you'll love it.

We got married in August and had our entire wedding party staying at Marcotte's from Thursday through Sunday. I can't overstate how welcome they made us feel and how many little things they did to make our stay absolutely wonderful.

The rooms are neat and clean. Each one is different, but there's a focus on antiques, quilts, and soft colors. For our wedding group, the rooms were perfect because we had so many different combinations of people: couples, couples with young kids, families, groups of twenty- and thrity-somethings, etc. We were able to utilize every inch of the place, and I think every bed was full. We could isolate the later night party into the garden apartment, and the younger kids could sleep soundly elsewhere in the motel. And Art made a bonfire that we were able to sit around too.

However, that is only part of what made Marcotte's so great. Donna and Art actually were a pretty big part of our wedding! Donna makes coffee and muffins and puts them outside your door every morning. Perfect fuel to start the day. Art lent us the extension cords that we used at our outdoor ceremony. Our friend (and officient) needed to print his speech - - and Donna just did it for him! I had two packages delivered with no problems at all. This is the kind of help that is absolutely invaluable.

The rooms are very reasonably priced for what you get. There's internet which works well if you're in the lower number rooms... otherwise, you have to sit outside near to those rooms. Almost all of the rooms have an adjoining door, but they lock soundly if you're not interested in being friendly with the neighbors.

I highly recommend Marcotte's to anyone who is interested in visiting the area. The location is good (although not perfect) for visiting Galena, and there are lots of other nice places very close by (The Broken Yolk for breakfast, Woodbine Bend for golfing, E-Town Cafe for coffee in Elizabeth). Views out the windows are green and mostly excellent.

Thanks, Donna and Art, for everything!

Just needed a bed and shower. Woke up to our own personal pot of coffee and fresh blueberry muffins outside our room. Wonderful. The owner was personally interested in making sure everything was ok.

The stay was the best I've ever had in any stateside hotel. And the price was awesome. It was spacious and clean, and fresh, and had a homey feel to it. The bathroom was clean and fresh. And the lady at the desk made us feel so welcome by showing us to our room, and making sure we were comfortable. Every morning, she made muffins and coffee and brought it to our door. The muffins were AMAZING.
