First and foremost the view on the Ramboda valley is stunning, but sadly there the good new ends.

Arriving we were instantly conscious that the hotel was in the main an open concrete structure and seemingly catering for tourists arriving by coach. The rooms were basic and ours had a strong smell of the sewage treatment plant below the hotel. The restaurant food was the worse we have eaten in Sri Lanka, served by a number of staff who didn’t appear to care. The restaurant is a massive vault of a room with concrete floor and walls so the combination of wooden chairs being scraped as they moved plus the cacophony of noise from the tour bus groups, all made for an unpleasant experience. Breakfast was equally dismal.

To cap it all, the kitchen staff arrived at 5 am and went about their work in as noisy a way as you could imagine, which was made worse as the noise echoed off the concrete walls and up the stairwells. They appeared to have little comprehension that they were working in an environment where customers were trying to sleep.

Feel free to ignore these comments and book for yourself- the price is right. Also feel free to write a more glowing response if you have a more positive - but you have been cautioned that it may disappoint

Another tourist trap we were taken to by our driver. We first stopped at the tea factory. As two of us are agriculturists, they are pretty familiar with tea making process and tea qualities. They are very certain that there is no way this tea factory was genuinely making tea for sale. Also the girl who was trying to explain tea making process clearly didn’t know enough abt tea growing or fermentation process. Finally, when we reached the end of tour and looked around in their shop, it was clear everything was absurdly overpriced. For 50g of golden tip, they would charge 3500rupee without any packaging. And you would get single origin golden tip at the maximum 2/3 of the price. When asked why they charge so much more than high end shopping mall in Colombo, the girl said because their tea is fresh. Honestly, why would anyone buy freshly fermented tea ?( also there is no way their tea is fresh because they just don’t make their tea in the so called tea factory.)

Our driver also made us dine at their adjacent restaurant. Their food was very bland and papaya wasn’t fresh. At the of the visit I learnt this is yet another store of oak ray company. I think this oak ray business is just here to con tourists. (Their wood carving, herbal garden are clearly all con business). The only redeeming feature would be the view from their terrace.

We were given a room in the new part of the hotel right below the Tea factory which is not real, by the way. This part is still under construction and terrible noise is around all the time. The room was spacious but very dirty. The only positive thing at this hotel is view from windows, but the price for this is too high. You'd better come for a few minutes to make some photos from hotel's terrace rather than staying here. Bad experience.

We had a group of 12 paxs for 2 nights. Upon arriving, we were mersmerised by the view from the reception area. Everything at a glance was good. We were checked into the new wing. There were construction still ongoing and was told the noise will stop at 5pm.
Upon entering, the room was huge but very basic. It seems to be a rush work to get the rooms rented out. You can still smell of a place that’s probably just handover a day after the complete construction (see photos). Dusty too.....
We insist rooms to be changed and they inform there’s nothing they can do as all rooms in old wing are occupied.
Throughout the night, there were very tiny insects on the bed despite us sweeping it off several time. There’s only a ceiling fan but due to security, the balcony door can’t be left open not to mentioned uninvited guests (insects).
We managed to change to the old wing for the 2nd night. The hot water was not working and need to shower in icy water. Probably due to drainage issue, we could smell something pungent the next morning.
