“Great education detour”

Lincoln Douglas Debate Square
Reviewed April 4, 2018 via mobile

Right next to the famed Union Dairy ice-cream parlour is a park. Two life size figures of Lincoln and Douglas on a wooden stage mark a significant time in history. The path through the park has several markers to read / view concerning the historical event that took place here. You will leave having gained knowledge and a deeper appreciation and respect for the times and what took place here.
Enjoy your visit and oh, don't forget the ice- cream!

The park marks a moment in US history which is fading from memory but is kept alive in Freeport. A series of sign boards explain the events leading up to the Lincoln - Douglas debate and the importance of what was said in the so called Freeport Doctrine.

Our two boys aged 11 and 8 years found it interesting.

Aim to spend 30 minutes or so.

This small park is the site of one of the famous Lincoln Douglas debates. It is a quick walk viewing various plaques about the historical event and park. It doesn't take long to view it and if you are a history fan, you will want to mark it off your list.

Part of Freeport history took place here, Lincoln Douglas Debate, and this small park with the statutes and history wrote in glass viewed podiums, brings it to life. It is next door to Union Dairy, a walk back in time Ice cream and eats shop, you can grab some and take and eat in Debate Square If you like. Great place to relax on benches there and picnic tables in summer.

We travel a lot, look for little bits of history here and there. This park is well maintained and a nice little side trip. Ice cream shop next door is a plus too
