Six of us had dinner for the first time at Cracklin' Jake's on Saturday night. The restaurant is located in Banner, IL, so don't look for it in Canton, IL. The menu selections offer a great variety at reasonable prices. With the six of us we tried several different items. Two of us had the Jambalaya. It was tasty, but one dish had no shrimp or sausage, just chicken so it was sent back to the kitchen. The returned dish had chicken and sausage, but no shrimp, but our friend did not send it back again. Looks like the kitchen could check to make sure they include all the ingredients they advertise in the dish. Our other dishes included the pork marcela, fried chicken, whole catfish, and bison stroganoff. Everyone was happy with their selection. Ignore the menu on their web site, it is not current. Also be warned that for tables of six or more they automatically add a 18% gratuity (one of my pet peeves, since I'd prefer the wait staff earn their tip vs. having it guaranteed).
There is one big drawback on this restaurant and it's the NOISE. I can honestly say it's the noisiest restarurant I have ever dined at. The floors are slate tile, and the walls and vaulted ceiling knotty pine, so there is no where for the sound to be absorbed. We could not hear the waitress read the specials and at our table of six the two people sitting at each end of the table could not hear each other. We were all shouting at each other during the entire meal.
So the food was good and prices reasonable, but I will not be returning on a Friday or Saturday night. Maybe we'll give it another try on a weeknight and hope the crowd is smaller and noise level a whole lot lower.
