Start here when visiting Galena. Lots of information brochures about the area. The best part is the staff at the information center. They take the time to listen to you to discover your interests and make recommendations based on them.

The Old Market House at 123 North Commerce Street, a block off Main Street in the heart of downtown Galena, has been converted into the Galena Welcome Center and is the place for visitors to start their tour of the historic town. Built in 1845, the brick Greek Revival style building originally served as a city hall and enclosed public farmer's market until 1910. It was restored in 1954 and refitted by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency to serve as a visitor's center and museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Open daily from 9 to 5, the Old Market House is a must stop for tourists looking to arrange for guided tours and to establish an itinerary of sites to see and things to do and places to eat and sleep. In addition, there is an extensive collection of artifacts and photographs pertaining to the history of Galena.

There are some very good exhibits on the Grant family and the Civil War. (I was amused to see two pair of Mrs. Grant's shoes.). I thought we would spend about 15 minutes but was surprised when we walked out an hour later. Good to do in combination with the tour of Grant's house...or on a rainy...or a hot day.

We first visited the Galena Welcome Center because we were looking for a map. The center is in the "Old Market House", a building created during Galena's golden age to rent wagon stalls out to merchants who would sell their wares there. Nowadays, instead of finding potatoes and grains, you will meet helpful staff who can provide you with valuable information about the area. The center was a little hard to find (especially as we went there to get a map of the area). You will find it on Commerce St., which is the closest road to the river that runs parallel to the river.

They are the same building.
