This is a fun stop while in Galena. The museum houses many interesting things from the area and it is also a place to purchase tickets for various events in town.
Our family took the walking tour with Ulysses Grant. Fun time!

The Old Market House Historical Site was built in 1846 and was a central part of the community in the early days of Galena. This house is open every day from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and there is no cost to enter (but they suggest that you leave a $2 donation). Just inside the front door is an information center with a couple of very helpful people that will answer any Galena tourism question.

I stopped here with my wife on a Saturday morning in mid-August and thought it was pretty average but was OK for a quick visit. I enjoyed the US Grant memorabilia and got super excited that his original uniform was on display (but the help desk said it was only a copy). There were several cases of civil war and Galena memorabilia and I thought the items were pretty interesting. Unfortunately the collection was not professionally displayed and the items were haphazardly placed all over the cases.

Overall I thought this place was just OK and is not a must see attraction in Galena I recommend that you stop if you need travel information or just happen to be walking by. I recommend that you do not go out of your way to visit this property. The main reason I stopped was to see the art show that was taking place in the yard outside the building.

Start here when visiting Galena. Lots of information brochures about the area. The best part is the staff at the information center. They take the time to listen to you to discover your interests and make recommendations based on them.

The Old Market House at 123 North Commerce Street, a block off Main Street in the heart of downtown Galena, has been converted into the Galena Welcome Center and is the place for visitors to start their tour of the historic town. Built in 1845, the brick Greek Revival style building originally served as a city hall and enclosed public farmer's market until 1910. It was restored in 1954 and refitted by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency to serve as a visitor's center and museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Open daily from 9 to 5, the Old Market House is a must stop for tourists looking to arrange for guided tours and to establish an itinerary of sites to see and things to do and places to eat and sleep. In addition, there is an extensive collection of artifacts and photographs pertaining to the history of Galena.

There are some very good exhibits on the Grant family and the Civil War. (I was amused to see two pair of Mrs. Grant's shoes.). I thought we would spend about 15 minutes but was surprised when we walked out an hour later. Good to do in combination with the tour of Grant's house...or on a rainy...or a hot day.
