“Clean, well kept, convenient apartment”

Strong points: Top floor has a nice view of the port, there is a public terrace 2 min walk away with a sea view, convenient to all activities in Port Soller. Good contact with the owner's associate, who was very helpful. It is an old house but well kept/renovated, bright and comfortable, in a small street in the old town, with lots of meandering alleys around it; about a 2-3 minute walk to the first shops/restaurants. The house has a high chair and child barrier (spiral staircase is otherwise a danger to toddlers), a baby cot is available but must be requested; Sky TV, DVDs and player on hand. Quiet street. A nice place to relax, with lots of charm.
Weak points: no dishwasher, no internet, access may be difficult for people with restricted mobility (tight spiral staircase inside, alleys and staircases in the old town), parking is 2-3 minutes walk away down an outdoor staircase or a small street. Be advised that Port Soller (pronounced as Sawyer) is very developed, most inhabitants are elderly tourists, mainly from Germany, some from the UK or other northern countries, very few Spaniards here. Its beaches are not the best, and the coast is rocky, with cliffs (very impressive views, and probably some wonderful hiking, but if it's a beach you want, don't come here; it takes at least 40 minutes to get to a good beach). The owner and his representative were both very helpful, but I was not given the address prior to arrival (instead, directions to a meeting point). It would be better to give the address too.

Management Response

Many thanks for your 5 Star review. We always appreciate feedback from our guests and we are very pleased you enjoyed your stay.
With regard to your list of “Weak points” I believe most of your comments to be a bit unfair and/or inaccurate. Therefore I will respond to them individually:
“No dishwasher” – This is clearly identified on the website. We may install one in the future if there is significant demand.
“No internet” – This is clearly identified on the website. Free WiFi and Internet are both available locally. Many, if not most, of the restaurants and bars now offer free WI-FI to customers. There are also 4 internet cafes around the bay.
“Access may be difficult for people with restricted mobility (tight spiral staircase inside, alleys and staircases in the old town)” – We clearly state on the website that the property has a spiral staircase. We also state that the property is not suitable for people with Restricted Mobility or for Wheelchair Users.
“Parking is 2-3 minutes’ walk away down an outdoor staircase or a small street.” - Once again, it is stated on the website that parking is available within a couple of minutes walk. There are 4 free car parks all within a few minutes’ walk. For info, the “outdoor staircase” you refer to, is known locally as the “Mallorcan Spanish Steps” and is a highly photographed scene.
“Be advised that Port Soller is very developed” – There are many pictures of Port Soller on the website which show how it has developed over the years. There has been a considerable investment in the port ensuring that any development is attractive and tasteful. This includes one of Europe’s top 5 hotels.
“Most inhabitants are elderly tourists, mainly from Germany, some from the UK or other northern countries, very few Spaniards here” – This may be the case in October, when you stayed at Ca’n Barbara. However, this is definitely not the case all year around. The Port is extremely popular with couples and young families of many nationalities. Furthermore it is visited by many Mallorcan families from all over the island.
“Its beaches are not the best, and the coast is rocky, with cliffs (very impressive views, and probably some wonderful hiking, but if it's a beach you want, don't come here” – There are 4 beaches around the bay, two soft sand, one hard sand and one stony. The sand on the two soft sandy beaches stretches well into the sea and, certainly in my view and many of our previous guests, they are excellent. In fact, the Port of Soller is the only place to offer sandy beaches on the entire west coast of Majorca.
“It takes at least 40 minutes to get to a good beach” - The nearest sandy beach is 10 minutes walk away and the furthest is 20 minutes away.
“I was not given the address prior to arrival (instead, directions to a meeting point). It would be better to give the address too.” – We provided you with a detailed map showing the exact location of Ca’n Barbara. Just 5 days before your holiday I asked if you had any outstanding questions! You did not mention this.

“Stunning apartment in Port Soller, Majorca”

We had a fantastic stay in Ca'Barbara. The house is clean very comfortable with excellent facilities and deceptively spacious. We went in late October and weather was fine, mild with some lovely sunny days. The views from the living room over Port Soller are stunning, at all times of the day and night.. It's a busy fishing port with plenty of boats and even tall ships coming and going. The apartment is in a quiet street, with just the occasional car or scooter . The tram into Soller has to be done (5euro single) and we took the amazing train ride into Palma (17.90 euro return),highly recommended. Palma itself was a pleasant surprise and well worth the visit. The seafront Cathedral is a fantastic buiding. When we returned to Soller we were amazed to find free Miro and Picasso exhibitions in the station building. If your feeling brave, put your driving skills to the test, avoid the tunnel and take the mountain road back into Soller, has to be done! There are plenty of really good restaurants on the sea front serving locally caught fish, gambas, tapas and some fine Mallorcan dishes. 10/10 for Can 'Barbara and Port Soller

“Fabulous views”

Ca'n Barbara is a gorgoeus old fisherman's cottage overlooking the harbour in Soller. It has been very well renovated to provide excellent accommodation with a good sized living area upstairs with a lovely little balcony which is perfect for sunny breakfasts and a very large main bedroom with a truly comfrotable king sized bed. There is also a smaller bedroom with twin beds. The cottage is brilliantly placed for restaurants and alfresco drinks along the harbour. I would definitely recommend it to friends.
