Description: Illinois was recently named one of "11 Top BBQ Cities in America" by Thrillist, thanks to 17th Street. Mike Mills and his crew are proud to support and shine a spotlight on Southern Illinois, sharing the gospel of barbecue and their delicious food both in Southern Illinois and nationwide. At 17th Street, barbecue is a culture, not a concept. The restaurant is a community gathering place where guests become family. Rooted in history and family, their delicious barbecue smoked using local apple wood and their famous Magic Dust(R). Owner Mike Mills has devoted his life to the pits and is considered by his peers a true pioneer, legend, and leading force in the barbecue world.

On road trip, visited here for lunch; given the reviews & their awards at BBQ contests, had high expectations. Service was adequate, did have to "flag server" for refills on ice tea. We ordered ribs & brisket, both were served warm, not hot; flavor & taste were just average, at best. Several BBQ at home (Greensboro, NC) are just as good. Food took a while to be served to table. Staff seemed pre-occupied with their phones. Overall, disappointed. Banda's in Mt. Vernon was better!!

The food is usually cold and just doesn't taste as good as it did a few years ago. Quality and quantity has declined. Service is usually alright. Bunch of girls with long hair and jeans that are too tight. Everyone that works there is on their phone too.

Due to BBQ sauce used on product, it was a mustard base that was not an enhancement to the meat. I found nothing that confirmed that this had been award winning BBQ.

The reputation for good bbq made a stop at 17th a welcome opportunity. We were quickly seated and drink orders taken. I chose a two meat plate with ribs and brisket...fries and beans for sides.

I was really impressed with the ribs and beans but no so much with the brisket. The ribs were tender and seasoned nicely, while the brisket lacked any real flavor. The biggest miss was the house bbq sauce which was a sweet Carolina style sauce that I chose to pass on.

Being exposed to KC barbecue on a regular basis raises the bar pretty high. 17th Street would get “smoked!”

I had dinner with my sister and her husband. I had the pulled pork sandwich and coleslaw. It was excellent. My sister so enjoys the baked beans she had them as both of her sides. The service was quick and efficient. If you like Carolina style BBQ this is a good place to eat.
