“Best Polish Deli”

Kalinowski Sausage & Deli
Restaurant details
Reviewed April 27, 2016

This is one of the best Polish stores you will find. The owner makes a wide array of sausages and smokes his own pork butt. I've taken relatives from Poland there when they get homesick. I often see tears coming down their cheeks because it even smells like a Polish grocery store. All of their prepared foods are great. I no longer cook Polish food. I just buy everything there and serve it in my dishes. The bread selection and pastries are also wonderful. I buy all of my tea there. You will never find a wide array of teas like this at Jewel or Mariano's. Take some time and go there. You may wait in the deli line. Just take a number and enjoy the smells and ambiance.

They have all the standard deli fare and reasonable prices. If you have recently moved to the area from the city and miss the corner deli, this place is for you. They have all the delectables you have come to enjoy. If you have never had Polish food then you will be in for quite a treat as this place represents the fare quite well. The service is ok. While not unfriendly it is not really what I would call cheerful.

The moment you walk through the doors the unmistakeable smells of old world Poland swirl through your nostrils. The barrels of dill pickles, the rows of hanging sausages, the rubs of Kapusta mingle, yet are distinct. There are numerous foods imported from Poland to complement the home cooked Polish staples like golumbki and pierogi. In addition to dozens of different sausages from krakowska to prasky to kielbasa, there are Polish hamburgers, soups, pork chops, and several soups. The deserts are not overlooked: kolatchky, punczki, poppy seed rolls..... If you are a fan of solid Polish home cooking you can either get the ingredients or fully-prepared items to warm at home. You don't have to travel into the city for authentic Polish food. It is here.

I really thought that I might enjoy coming here, but instead, because of its size and the number of shelving units and displays, you feel really hemmed in. I can't imagine what it would be like at various holidays. Someone mentioned "insane", and I have to believe that it is. This place has all things jarred and boxed that are Polish delicacies, as well as a large variety of pastries. Though you can get sandwiches made, that seems to be a slightly difficult procedure. The couple of sandwiches that we had were good, but not great and, I suspect, one reason might be that the store is a bit overcrowded or busy. There is also a large variety of Polish sausages and some other Polish dishes and salads. What Kalinowski lacks, however, are table and chairs, so don't even think about eating there. And though I realize that this is a Polish deli, and there are certainly lots of Polish in the area that come here, it would be nice to see some of the signs with English sub-titles or translations. Not every person of Polish descent speaks the language.

There's a large contingent of Polish people in Mt Prospect and surrounding suburbs, so it makes sense there should be good Polish food. Kalinowski is the real deal. If you don't speak Polish you are in the minority but no worries there, they are all bilingual and everyone is very nice. We like the pastries and the liver and onions, among many things.

Near holidays and on weekends this place gets insanely busy.

Note though this is a specialty store, not a restaurant. There are no tables.
