Mt. Vernon is very fortunate to have this fine dining establishment right in the heart of Southern Illinois. Perfect atmosphere for a business lunch, romantic dinner, or evening out with friends. Live music on Saturday evenings. Very clean and service is great. I would highly recommend the spinach and artichoke dip, bruschetta, chicken fettuccine, and cheesecake.

I took several business associates out to lunch here and the food and service were fantastic. Every person there commented how good their meal was and they have a good selection. The fish tacos were great!

On a recent night in Mount Vernon my friends and I discovered a delightfully fantastic eatery. Having never eaten there before we were astonish by the outstanding food. My food (Hanger Steak with House polenta) was marvelous. The meat was done to protection and the house polenta with onions and mushroom was a marvelously combination. If you find yourself in Mount Vernon try the Rare Chop House you glad you did!

Simple is not easy to do! Rare Chop House does simple in elegant style, perfectly executed. We had the best ribeye I’ve had in years with the jalapeño cheese grits and a nice Merlot. Dessert of salted caramel cheesecake, chocolate mousse, and their famous Caboose coffee martini rounded out a fun, delicious romantic dinner. The place is quiet enough for a conversation, and the live guitarist understood what “background”music really meant.
Our server made sure I had gluten-free selections and took great care of us. We’ll definitely be back!

We live hundreds of miles from this restaurant and think that it offers one of the finest dining experiences available in America. Heretofore, any time we knew we'd be passing Mount Vernon on I-64, we have tried to be there at suppertime so we could go to the Rare Chop House. It's expensive--too expensive, our view--but the food and the service are invariably excellent.

I should mention that my wife and I are parents who took our children to fine restaurants when they were very young. But we also taught them how to behave and set strict limits on their behavior. Therefore, we are not anti-kid in fine-dining environments. But we also believe that parents have strong responsibilities to keep their kids' noise down, esp. in high-end restaurants where other diners are paying a bucket of bucks to be there.

We had a recent experience at the Rare Chop House where parents AND restaurant management resolutely ignored shrieking children for almost the entire 90 minutes we were there. It occurred in the 8-9:30pm time frame on a Saturday night. Our two-person tab, including tip, was about $130.

Unless we see or hear some evidence that management at the Rare Chop House will take action to require parents to get their out-of-control children under control, we will not return on a Friday or Saturday evening. We believe that this restaurant's management should be explicit in informing parents with small children PRIOR to seating them that shouting, shrieking, running around, etc., will result in the entire dining party being asked to leave. We are not going to shell out this much money to have our eardrums semi-pierced by the inaction of irresponsible parents and somnambulating restaurant management who refuse to take appropriate action.
