We did a lot of business at the Original Plush Horse the other day. We left with a birthday cake, two pies, cupcakes, a couple of chocolate milk shakes, a chocolate soda, a banana split and eight--count 'em, eight--quarts of ice cream. The Original Plush Horse at 12301 South 86th Avenue in Palos Park has been the "sweetest" landmark in the south suburbs for more than 75 years. You can't go there and just walk away with a waffle cone, can you? The trick is to decide which of about 40 flavors of ice cream you want to take home with you. I'll admit there are a couple of flavors that I'd like to see on the list--and I've make ownership aware of them--but it's hard to complain when there are so many delicious options. You can't take them all home, right? So on every visit to the Original Plush Horse, we choose eight. This time, we selected butter pecan, chocolate chip, cookies and cream, peach, cinnamon, strawberry, coconut gelato and apple pie. Oh, did I forget pralines and cream and banana fudge gelato and Rocky Road? Next time. Maybe by then they will have added orange sherbet or orange pineapple or rainbow sherbet or chocolate almond to the menu.

We are from Wisconsin and came here for ice cream it is literally some of the best ice cream we have had. And the prices are extremely reasonable. Definitely will go back when visiting our family in Orland Park Illinois!

Fortunately, we don't have to scream too loudly; the staff at Plush Horse is friendly, attentive, considerate, and generous with samples. The selection of flavors is huge! There's rich ice cream, gelato, and sorbet, as well as a variety of cones available...or a dish, if you are so inclined. The portions are as huge as the selection. Outdoor seating area is spacious, if the weather permits; parking across the street (and you need a car to get to this place). Enjoy! A single serving (large scoop!) in a waffle cone is around five dollars (August 2017).

This place has been here FOREVER, close to 100 yrs. Fabulous home made ice cream, & waffle cones, even baby sundaes, in a vintage building w/handicapped access as well. Huge selection of flavors. Sundaes, waffle cones, banana splits w/fabulous hot fudge, lots of flavors for shakes, floats & sodas too. Skip the other local, storefront chain on Rt. 45 & high tail it to 123rd & 80th Ave for the treat of a lifetime on a hot summer day or night. It gets a line out the door at the West side entrance, but service is swift & the line moves quickly. Snag a small table if you can & delight in the carosel horse that stands in the window while your taste buds enter a delicious trip to to a past when ice cream was really ice cream. There is also limited outside seating if you want to enjoy the natural surroundings with the contrast of hot weather & a cold treat as you lick around the edges of your cone. Not the cheapest around, but hands down, THE BEST ice cream in the South Suburbs! Also open early for coffee, latte, or muffins. Try the "glorious morning" muffins or pre-order your special ice-cream cake. YUM!
