My wife and myself are spending the Xmas Holiday at the impressive Bailbrook House Hotel (separate Review to follow) and this morning choose to walk into Bath along the nearby canal.

This took us through the village of Bathampton where we came across the lovely St Nicholas Church. So nice that we decided to have a closer look and were delighted - particularly, as my wife is a New Zealand and we have both lived in Australia - to find it was the final resting place of Captain Arthur Philip (First Governor of New South Wales).

Both the Church itself and the grounds are also well maintained - well worth 30 minutes of anyone’s time!

A beautiful church and churchyard. Burial place of Arthur Phillip 1738-1814 - First Governor of New South Wales Australia, Walter Sickert the artist and the man who invented Plasticine (apologies for forgetting his name.) If you enjoy history and beautiful memorials, it's well worth a visit. The Rector and staff are super helpful too. monuments

This place is a nightmare especially for traffic because of the Toll Bridge. Frankly the whole village is being ruined by the sheer amount of traffic that moves through this little fragile village. You spend most the time trying not to get run over if you're not too busy choking to death on car fumes, poor gridlocked village. Don't waste your time just DON'T BOTHER.

St Nicholas is a must visit for all Australians interested in Australian history as it is were Captain Arthur Phillip the First Governor of NSW is buried. Great displays and history adorns the walls of the church and a special memorial set up for the man himself.
