Schenstromska Herrgarden
Ranked #2 of 2 Ramnaes B&B and Inns

The Schenströmska Manor in Ramnas is certainly a different place to stay.

Décor is in that pre-distressed “shabby-chic” look, where furniture is chosen either for its appearance of age and wear and tear or where new items are deliberately distressed to achieve the appearance of being old, delivering a soft, yet opulent, but also rustic-style.

Unlike mansion houses of England and Italy, this house is not set in a landscaped garden, and is typically Swedish in that respect, with views over open countryside to nearby Lake Nadden and the Strömsholms Canal. There is also a peculiar arrangement with a very “industrial” view from the terrace of the main house across the factories and railway of the original owner’s business ventures, and quite unlike the lawns and landscaped views of most other European country houses and estates.

Breakfast was typically Swedish, with no hot option, but was to a high standard.

Rooms were clean. No mini-bar or tea and coffee in rooms. Bathroom was adequate and clean with under-floor heating.

Parking was on-sire and free.

Staying in March was probably not the best time to stay, as I was perhaps their only guest, with Christmas and the summer months being their peak time, and events, such as weddings being their main activity.

Staff deserve a special mention, especially Helen. All spoke good English and were most courteous and attentive, without being intrusive.

The restaurant wasn’t open in the evenings, and the location is a little isolated. There is a pizza restaurant in the village, perhaps a 15 minute walk away, but otherwise you need to travel by car to find food in the evening.

I'm told by local colleagues that the wine cellar is particulaly impresive, but I didn't parttake.

I would stay here again, and would recommend it to others

I recently stayed for a weekend at Schenströmska, which is located about 1.5 hours drive from Stockholm. We were met by very friendly staff and given a very cosy room in the 18th centruy building. The rooms really fit into the old ambience, although they have all the luxurious modern ameneties you would expect. The beds are really superb, it's worth going just for them :-)

The food, all the way from the afternoon tea to the dinner, was superb. The only negative thing to mention was the abscence of a cooked breakfast, but the continental brekafast was fine.

If you're looking for a nice, relaxing, genuine place to relax for a weekend to get away from it all, or a conference, go here.
