Staying overnight in Mishawaka/South Bend on a road trip and this was a stopping point (and we went to see the South Bend Silverhawks play...bad game for them but a neat little minor-league field).

I selected this hotel due to my preference for Holiday Inns/Expresses and this one was near the freeway for the next day. Check in was easy enough, though I am deciding I am really not liking non-automatic opening doors to hotels. Of all places, where you’ll be bringing in suitcases and other belongings, here an automatic door would be really useful. In our case, especially so since my friend is in a wheelchair. We’ve got a system down now but hardly convenient. In any case, agent was relatively efficient though didn’t go all that far out of the way. We had two rooms and I requested nearby rooms. The rooms were ultimately nearby, though there was a note on the registration card indicating if we wanted the connecting rooms room XXX was available. When I inquired on that setup, the agent seemed unable to figure out how to make that happen as apparently that other room had been pre-assigned to someone else. It wasn’t that important to me, so I didn’t push it, but a small ding on service.

On the plus side...bed was clean and seemed fairly new, and the bed was comfortable enough for one night. No concerns here and typical sheeting/bed covering one would expect from an Express. Location is convenient to freeway and South Bend suburban shopping. Modern AC unit in room that regulated temperature well, and didn’t seem overly loud.

Less positive...property has the new logo, so apparently passed the new inspections, but clearly a dated property. Hallways have worn carpeting and color decor is evidently not up to date. Furniture and wall coverings in rooms not modern and very reminiscent of the old, tired Holiday Inn. I didn’t like the non-granite top bathrooms, the very outdated and utilitarian plastic grating for bathroom lighting that is clearly from another era (as opposed to decorative lighting in modern bathrooms), some chipped paint in bathroom doorframes, and cheap looking bedroom lighting that is mounted to the wall and very basic metal covering over the wires. Televisions also outdated and not flat-screen.

Also of considerable concern...I stopped at the Front Desk to place an item into a safe deposit box. After the agent inquired with some manager he called, I was informed this hotel does not do safe deposit boxes - despite their very own guest directory saying, “Please do not leave money or valuable in your room. The hotel cannot be responsible for the loss of articles unless properly secured in the complimentary safety deposit boxes located at the Front Desk”. The agent says he was informed the hotel has not done this in three years. I didn’t argue the point with the agent and I ultimately was okay, but what hotel doesn’t offer safe deposit boxes? I cannot imagine the chain allows their properties to not offer safe deposit boxes, and I question if it’s even legal under state law.

Cleaning level is questionable in my room. Room did not smell fresh upon entry. I dealt with it, but I can imagine others would not. Also, when using a floormat to dry up some water on the bathroom floor, the towel did not come up clean.

Lastly, I specifically told the agent at check-in I wanted to pay cash and offered to pay upfront. I told him if he had to have a card on file for incidentals I would provide one but I didn’t want the card ran for more than a reasonable amount for incidentals (usually $25). He assured me I could pay cash at checkout and would put notes in the reservation. I asked him if the computer would automatically run the card overnight and he said no, he set it to a $0 amount. Lo and behold I got my receipt under the door and it says “Mastercard”. I expressed my disappointment at the Front Desk to the lady in the morning and she assured me they didn’t run the card. I paid cash and have my receipt but when looking on my bank account see they did exactly what I asked them not to do and they promised they didn’t do - run an authorization. It’s not the end of the world and I have the funds until the authorization drops, but the point is they didn’t carry through on their promise and basically all but lied about it.

Should I return to the area I would not return to this property.

We stayed here for one night. Were offered 3 different rooms and all smelled like smoke, body odor and vomit. Couldn't sleep. Rooms need serious cleaning and updating. Carpet was filthy.

Stayed one night at this hotel while traveling to the East Coast. The rooms were very clean. The hotel was clean. The staff was very good. The breakfast area was extremely busy. However, the women working that morning kept the food refilled, etc. They worked hard to keep everything well-stocked.
Price was quite reasonable also.
Would definitely stay here again.

Traveling for business can be quite uncomfortable! A different city, a different hotel. Rarely does one stand out. On a recent trip to Mishawaka, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. I was impressed from the start. I walked in the lobby and was greeted by a friendly clerk. I was also greeted with a very well decorated and clean lobby. My check in was flawless and the associate at the desk spent several minutes telling me about the area and giving me recommendations on local restaurants. My room was comfortable, clean and well appointed. I was delighted with the comfortable bed! I travel to the area a few times a year and will definitely make the Holiday Inn my "home away from home".

My wife and I were staying in town for my best friend's wedding. The wedding day was a hot one in South Bend, the country club where the wedding reception was held did not have adequate air conditioning, leaving all of the guests extremely hot and uncomfortable. By the end of the evening my wife and I were looking forward to coming back to our hotel room, showering and going to sleep in the air conditioning. Unfortunately our night would not end on a relaxing note.

We arrived back at the hotel at roughly 12:30AM, as many guests from the wedding did. We weren't in our room more than 5 minutes by the time my wife had hit the shower, and I followed as she removed her make up in the bathroom. As I showered we discussed the wedding, the day's events, the heat, etc. It was then that we thought we heard a noise. We stopped talking to listen closely. We then heard our phone ring. My wife went to answer it and was informed that it was the hotel manager and that we needed to come to the door. My wife quickly threw on clothes to answer the door, but the manager had already started to knock again. My wife answered the door and this is when we met Justin, the night manager.

Justin's first words to my wife were "I'm only going to say this once. I got a noise complaint about your room. If I get called again, you're leaving my hotel". I thought I had to have heard this wrong through the bathroom door; as I can't imagine anyone, more so a manager, not introducing themselves when they are dealing with customers and just launch into a tirade. I cracked open the bathroom door, as I was nude, to listen to what was happening. Justin spoke to my wife as I do to my 5 year old son when I am scolding him. He went on to say how he received complaints on our room for noise, noise that would be associated with a party. When my wife tried to speak he continually would talk over, interrupt and walk away from her. Needless to say, my wife was in shock as he ended his speech with "And next time answer the door when I knock".

I quickly got dressed and asked my wife again what had transpired. I was convinced somehow this hadn't just happened. I went to the front desk to speak to Justin myself; when I asked him to explain himself I instantly began to understand how my wife had just been treated, as Justin began to speak to me in the most condescending manner. I tried to explain to him, as my wife tried, that this was an impossibility since we were just two people, more so two people who had just arrived back to our rooms to shower and sleep. But, once again, he continued to speak over me, and threaten that I need to "let it go or leave the hotel". I began to walk back to my room, when I was stopped by an aunt of the groom. She was inquiring about what was happening, and this is when Justin left his post behind the desk to interrupt my conversation. He, again, had to explain to the grooms Aunt what had transpired (the complaint, investigation, etc.), as if he wanted her to know his side of the story. She too picked up on his condescending tone, and asked him if he understood that he"comes off as he is talking down to people". This is when he stated that he had "just gotten to work and had to deal with this". Both myself, and the aunt of the groom, looked at him in amazement, as if he was using that as a defense to his inexcusable behavior. I walked off in disgust, as the aunt of the groom did the same, but not before she informed Justin she would be writing a complaint letter.

I had to walk back out to our car to grab my tux jacket. I walked back in and saw the bride and groom exiting their room, they both saw that I was visibly upset and asked what was wrong. Not wanting to rehash the events to them on their wedding night, I simply gestured toward Justin. They approached him to ask what had happened. He first disputed that the groom was indeed the groom stating "you're not the groom, I don't know you", after my friend assured him he was the groom he once again told them his story. The bride looked at him confused, also sensing that it would be pretty hard for two exhausted people to sound like a "teenage party". When she inquired that he may want to apologize to me for his gruff manner he told her "he doesn't have the right to not respect me or my hotel". At this point the bride said she refused to deal with him on her wedding night and that she would simply contact the owner of the hotel, to which Justin told her "I'll give you my name". I was shocked at how brazen his tone was with the bride!

When I look back on this experience I will not think of my best friend's wedding, or the events that surrounded it, I will only think of Justin. He was unbelievably rude, condescending, threatening and harassing. I have never in my life been treated, as a customer, like this by anyone. He left my wife in tears, my friend's family in shock, the bride appalled and myself infuriated.

My family and I stayed at this hotel while attending a baseball tournament where the entire team decided to stay. Prompt service was given upon check in. Probably because it was the middle of the night. I did call on our way to confirm that we would be arriving and when I got there, the man at the desk said that he was wondering if we were coming or not. WHAT?
The family enjoyed the continental breakfast as well. Very nice selection. That was the only good thing about our stay.
We arrived in the middle of the night as mentioned and we were extremely exhausted after a four hour drive and working all day. My husband laid down in the bed and said, "It's going to be a long, sleepless, weekend". Wondering what he meant, I discovered it all when I got into the bed. I should have just slept on the dirty carpeted floor (turned my socks black). I have never been to a hotel where the bed was as hard as the floor.
The next morning we opened the draperies and what did we get to see? Bird droppings completely covering the window. Nice view!
I went to hop in the shower to discover mold all around the faucet and the tub casing. YUK! The toilet handle was the hardest handle to pull down and felt as though it would snap off every time that I had pulled on it.
THE DUST!!! Having bad allergies, this place was my worst nightmare. The corners of the carpet and anywhere else dust could be was!
Our phone rang in the middle of the night for no reason as well.
The shampoo and conditioner this hotel offers is the worst, cheapest, awful smelling, as well as the soap!
Upon check out, I went to turn in my keys to the front desk and was completely ignored. My husband ran into a desk clerk on his way out and she asked how his stay was and said that he would recommend new beds and that they were the worst that he has ever experienced at any hotel and he travels a lot for business! Her response was, "We are in the process of getting all new beds". Thank goodness for future guests!
Our friends stayed in a room down the hall and the day that they were leaving smelled an electrical burn smell. The hotel did act quickly upon that and called an electrician. Another friend asked to rent a refrigerator and she was told that they only have a few on hand and they were out! One night the kids wanted to pop popcorn and there was not a microwave in sight!
We are Marriott Rewards members and there is a Fairfield Inn directly across the street. We have never had a bad experience with them. Since our team was staying at this hotel, this is the only reason that we stayed with the HIE. Sure wish that we would have just walked back and forth and stayed with the hotel chain that has always been pleasing!
Oh and if you want to wash anything at this hotel, no coin washer and dryer which we all needed for our players uniforms and don't plan on printing important documents form the "business" center (a small desk and computer), it may not be working!
Would never stay at this hotel again! As the saying goes. You get what you pay for. And we got what we paid for!
