If you are going on a weekend, plan to wait or make a reservation. The food is why. Fantastic big breakfast meals and excellent baked goods. The Iowa University students know that! You will have to wait for a table. It gets very crowded on the weekends.

It’s called the Cottage because the business began downtown in a building that had been a house. At that location, the business served lots of sandwiches and a hot food special to a lunchtime clientele that walked there.

The current location is just near some car repair shops and similar businesses, which is totally different from the college-downtown scene where they had been. So there are fewer sandwiches and beverages, and a lot less seating. Just the same, you can get a really good bakery breakfast or lunch and eat it there — you’ll just have to drive there.

The baked goods are always very fresh and tasty. The $1 muffins are the best deal - same price as many years ago.

The workers (and ownership) here are long-time Cottage veterans. They clearly love what they do, and they are very friendly.

Each time we ordered a birthday cake or for any occasion, it was just a treat. Their carrot cake and strawberry tort are just phenomenal. We ate their since they were located in Linn street. You can never loose by eating their fantastic desserts and bakery and they cater as well.

I ordered catering for a conference. The pastries tasted scrumptious, fresh, and went well with their great coffee. The breakfast burritos were amazing both in flavor and size. The coffee was rich, smooth, and still piping-hot when we drank it at the conference. I also got some 'day-old' muffins which tasted better than many bakeries' fresh muffins.

I would absolutely cater here again. In fact, I would come here for breakfast or lunch anytime.

Stopped here as it was great restaurant when I was in PH.D. program to see that the Cottage as changed its focus to catering. The location makes it a good place for catering. Counter service person very friendly, talked about the Old Cottage that used to be the hot spot for students.
