“Friendly and interesting on a small scale”
Review of Sunset Zoo

Sunset Zoo
Reviewed August 13, 2017

Kids love to visit this zoo every time we're in Manhattan. The exhibits are close together (compared to the National Zoo in D.C.) which makes walking the zoo a breeze. Love the peacocks that wander around on their own!

Living in the area we'd been many times through the early years with our children, and now are taking grandchildren. Although the zoo spent many $$ to build a new ticket office/gift shop and an education center, the animal exhibits are sadly lacking. It is understood the zoo is small and land-locked, but there doesn't appear to have had much spent improving the number of animals or their habitats. Some construction is currently going on at the moment. The playground is very nice for small children, but that shouldn't be the focus of a zoo. When our children were little, there was a nice children's section but that is merely a walking loop now with little to see. The number of flamingos is impressive but their enclosure is really small for their number. The education center appears to be for administrative purposes and social events. I couldn't take grandchildren in last week because the person selling tickets said their daycamp was using it and "there isn't much to see anyway." Overall, disappointing. I had already purchased a family membership for this visit but justified that knowing the membership is reciprocal with other zoos.

Went with our daughter's family and always enjoy the exhibits, which are very well done. The animals appear healthy and calm, and the zoo is just the right size to see in a day with small children. The picnic/park area in the center is nice for a rest stop or snack. We took a lunch and picnicked mid-day. Sunset Zoo is a rare treat in a town the size of Manhattan.

This zoo was so peaceful and so nice to walk around. We are from Omaha and our "world top 3 zoo" is just a mad house most of the time. So this was a great mix cool animals and low key atmosphere. It's a hike though! So bring your walking shoes!
