Feisty One and I were beckoned to go to dinner with our part-timer, Florida-based neighbors who live in our condo. They are on our "official" approved list of foodies. They travel internationally every few months and are well-versed in wine/food. We arrived, seated quickly(MAKE RESO at least a week in advance). Bill ordered he and I a great red and the gals a great white. I'm gonna cut to the chase--When he said the Dover Sole was the best he's EVER had, I was in. Let me say this--service was impeccable, wine was divine, but damn if he was SO right. Not only was it the best Sole I've had, it's not a tiny 4-ouncer that leaves you wanting to order a pizza when you're done. We will most definitely be back.

As dining becomes relentlessly more casual, it was a pleasure to find a perfect example of what fine dining should be: nice décor, padded tables with white linens, flowers on the table, butter knives, attentive service, and, of course, excellent food.
Our meal began with a prompt serving of bread and butter that kept us occupied until our first course arrived. Delicious tomato basil soup warmed us up on a rainy night, and our braised rib with polenta and veal cutlets continued to comfort us. Desserts of opera cake and a strawberry crêpe completed the evening. We were guests so we did not see the final bill, but the menu prices, including wine, seemed in line with a restaurant at this level.
People living in this residential part of Kansas City are incredibly lucky.
The date of our visit was October 6, 2013.

Cafe Provence is one of the few remaining places in Kansas City to serve authentic French cuisine. Dining al fresco during nice weather is a plus even though you are looking at a parking lot instead of the Seine. The limited menu always has something delicious to eat and the service is attentive; albeit the dining room is small and compact. Reservations are a must.
