The complainers may be right about the lack of neon-lit trail signs, but overpriced? Compared to Stratton's $115 alpine lift ticket and numerous $1299 ski jackets in the Stratton Village shops? The value at Prospect was outstanding.

We just skied Prospect on Monday Feb 19 and were absolutely amazed at the quality of the snow and the quality of the grooming. Yes, this is an old, rustic ski area but we loved the analog charm. It brought back wonderful memories of first learning to ski at Jiminy Peak with wooden downhill skis circa 1970.

We had walked on the Nordic trails at Stratton 2 days before and only found icy snowcat tracks where there was coverage at all. This was our first time skiing at Prospect but we will be back as soon as possible.

We did not stay for a meal, but the lodge was cozy and had a wonderful aroma of my grandmother's delicious roast beef.

I was also delighted to learn that my alma mater - Williams College - just had its winter carnival cross country ski races at Prospect the week before.

Overly urban types who are expecting a Sachs Fifth Avenue outlet right next to the base lodge should stay away. More trail room for the rest of us who appreciate the snow quality, beautiful woods and vintage vibe.

Prospect Mountain is a gem in southern Vermont. Being located at around 2,000 feet, they get snow when other cross country places get rain or nothing. The season usually starts early and the snow stays in to April. The trails are interesting, well groomed, and un-crowded. The food is exceptional and the bacon/cheeseburger is a favorite. I ski there whenever I can driving 30 minutes each way. I would recommend it as a day trip to anyone within 100 miles of more looking for a great day of cross country skiing.

Have had great times skiing at Prospect Mountain. Reasonable prices, friendly and helpful ski shop attendant and she is an expert at waxing cross-country skis. Trails are well-groomed and fun. Looking forward to returning this winter!

This is the second year my husband and I have had season passes to Prospect and we couldn't be more pleased. The location is great for receiving snow, and the grooming is top notch for maintaining snow. The trail maps and markings don't necessarily indicate how difficult or how long the trails are, but once you've gone for a bit, you figure it out and there's usually other skiers around you could ask for directions if necessary. Quite a few customers are regulars and know the trail system. The lodge offers a warm wood burning stove and variety of food options that seem heavenly after a hard day of skiing. The lodge stays open late which is a bonus compared to many places that close at 4:00/4:30.

Several previous reviews w/negative comments are totally accurate. While the trails are very well groomed and numerous, there are almost no trail intersection markers or blazes of any kind. Plus the childishly-hand drawn map is nearly useless. No mileage/kms.distances; only a few names (which don't necessarily correspond w/anything on the trails). I've also rarely seen any trail map - even a poorly drawn one - that doesn't have a North directional legend to at least help you navigate the cat's cradle of trails w/a GPS or basic compass. The snowshoe trails can only be reached by traversing several miles on x-country trails. They are ungroomed, so be prepared for true backcountry shoeing if powder is deep. Also agree that the staff (?) is not only unfriendly and unwelcoming, but totally useless w/directions and/or assistance. Adding insult to injury are the incredibly high trail fees. It's big and usually has snow when other places don't, but it's bare bones. Oh, and you'd think the place was closed or abandoned by the look of the roadside sign that is totally disheveled, broken, rusted and even the name is missing a letter: "Pros_ect". Maybe if it wasn't so high priced I may have given it another star. Maybe.

Expect to be greeted by a disheveled looking place. Sign missing letters. All kinds of junk on what appears to be a unused building across from where tickets are purchased. Very dark building where tickets are purchased. Very unfriendly clerk. No welcome to Prospect, no smiles, no enjoy your ski, pricing is quite high . They have a monopoly, so I guess they can. But there are plenty of other places to ski in Vt or Nh where prices are much less? The lodge is dark and definitely 50 years old or more. They serve food which is good, and fits the bill after a day of skiing.

Skiing here is like skiing in a rabbit's warren of trails. Trails come in from all sides after only 2 minutes of skiing. It is pretty basic here. Nothing very challenging. Hills are minimal, it is mostly flat. The Mountain Trail down needs to be reworked so that the turns are easier to navigate. I suspect it is a terrorizing ride for the average tourist. It is old style skiing.
Grooming is good, trails are unchallenging, and is tourist centric.

Prospect Mountain Nordic Ski Center is a terrific place to enjou cross country skiing. They take pride in their well groomed trails. Their site seems to be a natural "snow bowl" as it gets more snow than most places in southern VT. The ski lodge is a great place to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate after a tour of their ski trails. They also serve good food. Try the chili in a bread bowl!

Prospect is a cross country skier's paradise. It has a fantastic trail system, with routes for all abilities -- some quite challenging -- and the grooming is first class. And thanks to the elevation, Prospect gets much more snow than the surrounding areas. It's not unusual to be able to ski into early April, long after all the snow in Bennington had melted. The lodge is a little ramshackle but charming in its own timeless way. No glitz, but good food and a lovely wood-burning stove.

Prospect Mt. frequently has snow when surrounding areas do not and this makes it a good destination for x-c skiing. They do a good job of grooming for both track-set and skate skiing. There is also a spacious lodge where you can get food and they have a ski shop. They are located 7 miles east of Bennington. It is always good to check their event calendar since they host high school and college races and these events can/do interfere with skiing.
