“Well Worth It”
Review of St. Fidelis Church

St. Fidelis Church
Reviewed November 6, 2017

It is well worth taking about 30 minutes off of your I70 trip to go south off the highway and visit this church. It takes about 5 minutes down the road and then you are there able to view a beautiful church and take photos.

We recently visited this Cathedral for a wedding. It is a towering structure in the small Kansas town and contains beautiful stained glass. It is worth a quick visit when you are in the Hays, Kansas area.

Who would build a church that seats 1200 over 100 years ago in a town that is only 1200 in population today??? The Germans that settled Victoria did, and it is impressive! We attended Mass here and the sound of the piano and singers in this stone "chamber" was beautiful. The whole property defies logic as to why it would be built on such a grand scale, which is why it belongs as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas. Worth the stop if your passing by, but attending Mass here is icing on the cake. There is an electronic tour guide with stops throughout the church as well.

We were forced to return home via a northern route because of the Harvey hurricane and ended up on I-70. The Basilica of St Fidelis, known as the Cathedral of the Plains, offered a break from the acres of sunflowers stretching across the plains. The history of its construction and the people of the area was inspiring. There's a book available of all the parishioners from 1876-1996 if you may have had relatives in the area.

We drove across Kansas and with little to nothing to see this was the perfect stop! It was super cute! Try to get there before it closes at 9 pm so you can go inside. It's pure beauty!! They've taken great care of this church from 1908
