THIS is my idea of great pizza: thin crust with a dusting of cornmeal baked in a wood fire oven until the edges are golden brown and hopefully a little charred in places, with fresh, delicious, and unusual toppings. Strong's is all that and more. The Newport shop is just steps from Newport on the Levee and, more importantly, within walking distance of my house. It's cute, quaint, and homey on the inside in an old house all divided up into small dining rooms with brick walls. The oven is in the front so you get to see the chefs in action and the pizza baking. There are pictures kids have drawn hung all over fridge and under the order/pick up counter so it's obvious you'll find a warm, family, friendly atmosphere. But the pizza...ah, the pizza. My absolute favorite is the pizza alla vodka. I mean how can you go wrong with vodka, right?!? LOL. Anyway, it's this wonderful creamy vodka sauce, lighter than your usual red pizza sauce, with seasoned mushrooms, spinach, prosciutto (which crisps up when baked - YUM!), and mozzarella. I've had their meat lovers and the Mediterranean which are both very good, but Pizza Alla Vodka is my staple. Fun to eat in, carry out, or if you're lucky to live in Newport like me, delivery. And did I mention there's a patio, too?
