This was a fun afternoon with the family. The guides have worked hard to make an old mine light and interesting. The front desk staff was sweet and very helpful. The kids loved the clear kayaks that light up. Lights are attached to the bottom of the kayaks to make each one glow. It is a great add on if you are in the Red River Gorge or Lexington area. However, I’m not sure I would tell someone it is with a 4 hour drive from Nashville. Still we had fun and have some fun pictures. Bring gloves and a heavier fleece ... and be sure to rent the neoprene socks ($1 pair).

However, I would strongly encourage SUP KY to give their chief safety officer (the man with the Chihuahua) some interpersonal skills training. As an attorney, I appreciate the need to be aware of safety and to mitigate risk. But there is another way. This guy was ridiculous. When we got there, he totally barked at 2 12 year old girls who were patiently waiting for the tour to start by pretending to hunt for Geodes. He took the rock away from them and snarked that it was a perfect structural specimen that they were ruining. Did I mention that we are in a limestone rock mine?
Then he came back to bark at one of the girls when she wanted to be in the clear kayak that was a little too large for her. If there is an issue, it needs to be addressed before the kid gets in the kayak. He was total overkill. (And she handled the kayak just fine thank you). THEN he started YELLING about how 5,000 lb boulders could fall down on you and sink the kayak and break your legs. We have tweens here- This is Ridiculous. What is the point of fear mongering kids???

And the piece de resistance.... as we were leaving, he was SHOUTING at a man who may have been approaching the weight limit for the crystal kayak. It can only be described as Fat Shaming. He was humiliating the man in front of his family. If there is an issue, there is a way to handle it - But not that way. The man was already in the kayak - and was made to get out of it in the most insulting of manners. To be clear, there is nothing strenuous about this activity ... Certainly not warranting the verbal assault that was predicated on that poor man.

The upside of it all was the chief safety officer created some teachable moments for us with the kids...on how to act and not act... we role played ways that he could have handled the situations differently and achieved the same outcome. it was sad that that was the takeaway from our adventure at SUP KY and is what the kids will remember and talk about.

The chief safety officer is the only reason I am not giving this review 5 stars.

We don’t have a chief safety officer but normally all of our staff actually gives crystals to the guests. I have talked to our staff and was told that your daughter was taking two large rocks and smashing rocks together on our deck out front. That she was asked several times not to do that and continued. We do have kids kayaks specifically for children to enhance their paddling experience the Crystal clear kayaks are quite large and hard for children to maneuver so that suggestion was for her overall comfort but I was informed they did give her what she wanted. In the end I was also told you stole the large rock we had for all of our customers to see on the porch for your daughter. I have had a customer service training with everyone last week to better improve delivery methods but generally children are well behaved and we don’t have any issues.

Thank you for your feedback we always use it to improve our product.

My husband and I went in the clear kayaks for the mine tour as part of my 50th b-day celebration in Red River Gorge. We're regular kayakers and really enjoyed this unique experience. Our guide was great and we learned all kinds of new things as we paddled through the mine. Small groups helped with not being on top of each other as we paddled through. We brought along our own neoprene gloves and booties (although you can rent them there) and we're really glad we had these to help keep our feet and hands warm. Also recommended is wearing something that dries quickly if you're in the clear kayaks. Our rear ends were soaked when we exited but dried quickly on our hikes around the Natural Bridge close by! This is a worthwhile trip that we'd do again. (It would be REALLY cool if you could go on a more private tour with just your own small group and a guide, maybe 4 people max, so you could explore more...we'd pay for that!)

Thanks so much for your suggestions we will add the private smaller tours to our fall tours. Also we added cushions to try and help the wet bottom situation but the fabric seats are terrible . We do have clear bottom kayaks with bolted plastic seats that we can keep dry.

Come back and visit soon

What a great experience! SUP Kentucky organized a private group tour for our group of 14 - the whole process from initial inquiry to the actual tour was seamless. We did the crystal clear kayak tour and everyone in our group (ages 18-56) loved it! The guides were friendly and knowledgeable, they shared the history of the mine and described some of the geological features, and were overall funny and entertaining. The glowing colored lights added even more to an already cool experience. We definitely want to come back to try the stand-up paddleboards!

Be prepared for somewhat chilly temperatures. You won't be wearing shoes in the kayaks, so warm socks are a good idea. I was comfortable in a sweatshirt and sweatpants, but you might want to bring gloves too. Life jackets and helmets with a headlamp are provided.

Make sure you know who you're booking with, as there are other tour operators in the same mine, but the small groups and personalized attention from SUP Kentucky can't be beat!

We visited on a chilly, rainy day in March and had a blast! The "office" is small, but clean and warm and the staff are super friendly while you're waiting for your time slot.
The tour guides are knowledgable, funny, helpful, and we loved their overall pace. The clear kayaks are beautiful and were in perfect condition-no cracks or scratches. They use LED lights to illuminate the bottom of the kayaks and at key points inside the mine...very cool!
The water is beautiful and clear, though super cold, so definitely recommend the gloves. Overall we thought this crew provided a great experience and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
