Stayed for a wedding function which was overall great. Rooms are functional, clean, well equipped and tidy albeit quite cool especially early evening/ night time. Decor in adjoining corridors is overdue some basic TLC but nothing that effected our stay.
Staff brilliant, very helpful, accommodating and knowledgable in particular the restaurant maître d' who went through every single item on the menu add hoc to advise on allergens for one of our party. We gave feedback on the day as this was very, very impressive and following morning they excelled and even have separate toaster for GF bread to avoid cross contamination.
Sadly that was it - down hill after that. The Wedding dinner was minus bread rolls for soup course, no gravy with dry chicken. No dessert choice except sorbet. Regretfully this spoiled the wedding dinner as the diner was either left out or ignored and had to chase staff constantly to find out if a course or food was coming or not.
Breakfast the following day was again without bread rolls or toast, no GF cereals whatsoever and a meagre offering of just water melon as the only choice of fresh fruit, tinned peaches and tinned prunes- which previous morning had been quite extensive. Given that they knew in advance of dietary needs (a health issue not a lifestyle choice I might add) we’re left somewhat confused as to how they could get it so right on the first 24 hours and by contrast so very wrong on the last evening/breakfast as they had set quite high expectations.
Reception happily took the compliments when it was right and further endorsed that the hotel was actually owned by a leading food company and as such, proud of its extensive knowledge and delivery of food items. Room service menu albeit due to change next week is very basic - basically just sandwiches @ £7.50 but be advised they carry a supplementary ‘tray charge’ of £5.00 which makes a sandwich in the room very expensive. Maybe pop down to the local pub and get 2x hot freshly cooked meals for same price?
This could have easily been a 5 star review, I presume they have freezers so GF bread or rolls shouldn’t really have been an issue-blaming the supplier for not delivering the bread rolls and your owned by a food company ? is unacceptable and must be embarrassing for the owners Compass Contract Services. How much time and effort to mix a little GF gravy ? takes me two mins at home! Fresh fruit for breakfast again it’s somewhat amusing it’s owned by a food company so no excuses.
It’s somewhat insignificant- but when family members are constantly discriminated against for their food needs, over what should really be a enjoyable and sociable dining experience, it totally spoils the experience.
Overall we loved staying there, the front of house staff are great. The visit marred only by supplies in the kitchen and poor communication ( they knew in advance of the visit) and ironically had it 110% covered first 24 hours which makes it more frustrating. Would we go back? absolutely yes! but maybe would call into the local shop on the way and take some GF rolls and some fruit just in case we arrive on an ‘off’ day
