“Voyages of a lifetime (3)”

Wanderbird Expedition Cruises
Reviewed February 15, 2013

Midwinter, and I'm still dreaming about the incredible places visited aboard the Wanderbird, places unattainable by larger ships. Hidden fjords, their high walls streaming with waterfalls, a bear ambling across a high meadow, a hauntingly beautiful abandoned outport, the vibrant streets of St. Pierre, France's last remaining bastion in North America - these are just a few of the magical places the Wanderbird can take you to if you love adventure, and are flexible and a free spirit.

Great food, company, captains and crew round out the adventure, and make it an experience of a lifetime. Go - you'll be glad you did!

We traveled on the Wanderbird for a week in 2010. At that time the boat was spending winters in Culebra (near Puerto Rico), but their primary venue is the Maine coast and northern Maritimes, up as far as Greenland.

Our experience in Culebra was a one-of-a-kind trip, the likes of which I cannot imagine we will ever repeat, unless we do another Wanderbird expedition. Rick and Karen are serious about safety and comfort as captains and professionals, and they also very likeable as people. The Wanderbird is meticulously kept. The food and accomodation were fabulous, although keep in mind that you are living on a smallish ship (90 foot renovated fishing trawler), with the natural limitations that go along with that life.

The world you see on the water and along coastal areas cannot be experienced in any other way than on a small vessel like the Wanderbird. You'll never forget your time aboard.
