“The Inns at Blackberry Awesome.”
Reviewed 16 November 2011

My girlfriend and I live relatively close to Camden, but still wanted to stay at a Bed & Breakfast for a romantic weekend retreat. Even in the "quiet season" they had a great selection of rooms. This was essentially a surprise for my lady, and I'm so glad I made this choice, because it exceeded both our expectations.
First, the short notice. I called for one room, one night, that night... and we were showing up later than regular Check-In hours. Cyndi Ostrowski was more than happy to accomodate us, so glad we were at least showing up before nine so she could get a solid dinner recommendation. It was Jim who greeted us at the door, at seven thirty, and was more than happy to give us the tour, offer amenities, recommend dining and make us feel comfortable.
Second, the room. Exactly what I envisioned as a New England bed and breakfast coastal town, and it made her dance behind his back in excitement. The woodstove.. the four post bed.. even the rugs, ceilings, trunks and windows. This place was inviting, and even an hour and a half from Portland, we were totally on vacation.
Third: Breakfast. Homemade granola, local yogurt, fresh waffles, berry sauces and intimate setting. I could go on, I won't, just trust. Both innkeepers prepared our meal, and served us gracefully. Jim chatted us up about travelling around the country while Cyndi wanted to know about our evening on the town. They filled us in to the winter festivities, which believe me, we'll most definitely be back for.
Our trip went spectacular. The Blackberry Commons was truly the focal point.

Room Tip: Go second story, go big bed, go fireplace.

I would highly advise anyone AGAINST staying here.

We made a reservation for a 2-night stay, confirming that the inn was dog-friendly. When we checked in, Cyndi Ostrowski (the innkeeper) informed us that, while the inn is dog-friendly, this did not apply to the room we had booked! She claimed that it was the policy of many inns to restrict dogs to certain rooms.

In 40+ years of traveling with dogs, I never have encountered such a policy even once before. By way of contrast, Ritz Carleton–universally acknowledged as one of the world’s premier hotel chains–accepts dogs in all their rooms all the time.

Nonetheless, Ms Ostrowski insisted that we instead stay in another room. The Marshal Point room was vastly inferior–significantly below the Bates Motel of Psycho fame. In fact, the room was so substandard, we decided to check out after only one night. Ms Ostrowski said she understood. She said she would have given us a refund immediately; however, as the booking was made via a 3rd party reservation service, she undertook to contact them to initiate a refund.

We did not hear from Ms Ostrowski and our calls to her were not returned. We subsequently received written notice from the reservation service that, in direct contradiction to what she had stated to us, Ms Ostrowski told them that because it was “inside of the cancellation policy, [she was holding us] responsible for the full cost of the stay.” She even wanted us to pay the full amount for the room we had booked, not the cheap room she made us stay in.

Blackberry’s “Marshal Point” room is atrocious. So is the innkeeper’s lack of integrity.

Room Tip: Choose a different place to stay.

This is a very old Inn that has been lovingly restored and maintained. our room was very small but perfectly adequate and comfortable. We thought noise from the main road might be a problem as our room was toward the front of the house, but we slept with windows open and were not bothered at all. Jim and Cyndi were enthusiastic hosts eager to share and recommend interesting things to do. We enjoyed them both. TV's are not available in every room which was a bit disappointing for the baseball fans in our group. If that is important to you,, be sure to ask which rooms have them. I think the gardens would be a lovely place to spend time earlier in the season, they were just going to bed for the season when we were there. Breakfasts were special, surprise local treats every morning. Great stay overall.

Room Tip: Ask which rooms have television if that is important to you

We were surprised by a friend with 2 nights at this lovely Inn, which consists of 2 buildings with a number of different rooms of all sizes and layouts. We had one of the smaller rooms, which was quiet, with (like all rooms) a private shower/bath. Our hosts were friendly and very helpful with recommendations for food and exploring the area. The breakfasts excellent, and we enjoyed the honor bar and access to coffee and tea 24/7. We liked the easy walking distance to town, too, but we were just enough outside the main area to have a bit more quiet (something not easy to do, being on Hwy 1). In the back of the Inn there is an extensive garden/lawn area, which in warmer weather is a lovely place to hang out and relax.

There are a couple of different rooms to sit and socialize, something that was quite pleasant since there were a lot of very interesting folks in town for a conference.

Any time I return to the area, I'd be enthusiastic about returning to the Inn.

This place is fine but nothing special. The inn is clean and the food is quite good but being met with instructions to carry your own bags up 2 and three flights of stairs is a poor first impression, not all that welcoming and difficult for some folks.

If you go with a group be prepared for it to be a real imposition to request to be seated together...actually, they will not accomodte group seating at breakfast. .Although they did honor the request at dinner, it was not with a smile.

The Innkeeper Cindy seemed overwhelmed with the multitasking required of her position .

I would choose another property in the future.

We reserved the Cape Elizabeth suite which had a queen bed in one room and twin in other. This inn is right on Highway 1 which is the main road through Camden ( address is Elm Street). There was road noise in the queen room but twin room was quieter. There is no room over this suite so guests are spared the sound of footsteps on aged wood floors. The rooms and bathroom were spotless and well appointed. Breakfast was lighter fare than some B&B's, but it was certainly adequate and delicious. It was the season for fresh apple cider and it really added some zing to the meal. The hosts were very cordial taking time to show us around and even calling ahead for dinner reservations. Ceiling fans were a welcome addition. It was a delightful place to stay and I would go back there on a night that wasn't rainy. A pesky leaking eave allowed a constant drip onto the air conditioner. Drip won't always be there, but the road noise will be. Perhaps running the air conditioner would help that problem.

Stayed one night while driving up US 1. Really enjoyed the tinker's cottage. It was a little more that I would have liked to spend but they served a very nice breakfast and I really liked the privacy of having a room which opened up to the outside with easy access to our car. Even though we were at a B&B, it allowed us to be by ourselves, no hallway, no sharing space. There was chocolate cake waiting in the main sitting area in the afternoon for guests. A nice treat. Our room had a great walk in shower, which was perfect for us. Very cordial and helpful hosts. Nice location, close to town, although we did drive rather than walk to restaurants and shopping.
