We stayed at the Camden Windward House for two nights in mid-October on our way to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We pulled up the B&B moments after driving through the small town of Camden. It is very noticeable and on the main road. The house is stately and historic looking. We were greeted by one of the owners, Dan, who checked us in and provided a thorough overview of the home and things to do in Camden. Dan the showed us to our room, the Chart Room.

The Bed
Definitely one of the larger rooms at this establishment, the Chart Room has both a sitting room and bedroom. The sitting room had a nice built-in bookshelf with television. On the opposite side was a small couch and table, next to an old-fashioned-looking gas-powered iron stove for heating. Given the time of year we visited, we definitely used this at night. Off of the sitting room is also a very nice bathroom with a jacuzzi tub/shower, toilet and sink. The bedroom had a large king bed and closet, and opened up to a private outdoor seating area facing the rear of the house. The entire suite, located just off of the Inn’s main living room, had beautiful hardwood floors and was on the first floor, making it easy to get in and out with our bags.

The Breakfast
Each morning guests gather in the dining room from 8-10 for breakfast. Coffee was ready and hot, and we were immediately greeted again by the owners who offered us fresh cut fruit and juice. The owners then took our order from a small menu. The first day we had blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs, and the second day a bountiful portion of French toast and another egg. The food was delicious and the eggs perhaps the most colorful and fresh I have ever eaten. Various breakfast meats (or even vegetarian “sausage”) were also available. Eating in the dining room was an extremely pleasant experience with guests sharing stories and local tips, as well as conversing with the owners. Overall a great start to both days.

Camden
One of the most beautiful places we have seen in the country, Camden is a small town full of shops, restaurants, neighborhoods, nature, and waterfront. Most of these are a very short walk from this B&B. With one full day, we opted mostly for nature, visiting Camden Hills State Park a few minutes up the main road. The small entrance fee is worth it. We drove to the top of Mt. Battie for a spectacular view of Camden and the surrounding area, as well as a vigorous hike through the adjacent forest. We also drove down to Rockport to see the Breakwater Lighthouse which was worth a stop.

The Owners
With such a smooth and comfortable operation, you would think that the innkeepers were experienced pros. In fact, the new owners Dan and Matt, took over this establishment only five weeks prior to our stay. Their quality of management after such a short time was impressive and notable. Career switchers and new to this profession, they bring a compelling personal story and palpable energy to this excellent B&B. With the winter to make enhancements to the home and plan for the coming busy season next year, I imagine that the Camden Windward House will emerge as one of the up and coming hotspots of this idyllic Maine getaway.

We stayed at Windward House two years ago and were absolutely enchanted. We looked forward to our stay there again this year, but were somewhat concerned when we discovered that the inn was under new ownership. We needn't have worried. Our three-night stay there a couple of weeks ago was every bit as comfortable and enjoyable as our first visit. Matt and Dave matched the original owners in every respect: friendliness, eagerness to please, and, most important, in their commitment to excellence. Aside from the sheer comfort of our room, the Coastal Garden, the breakfasts deserve special mention. There is a choice of items, but we found it nearly impossible to stay away from their blue berry pancakes. In sum, this was a case of traditions maintained, standards upheld, and service and comfort unreservedly provided .

10 out of 10 - Dan and Matt are great - and cook a mean breakfast. The Quarterdeck room is superb - quiet and spacious and beautifully appointed.
A perfect peaceful home away from home in a perfect town - in this crazy world.

We've been to this B&B many times, and have always enjoyed it. The last time we checked in, we found out there were new owners. At first I was a bit hesitant, because the old owners were amazing. But once we saw the room, and logged into the wifi (it is still amazing wifi), we felt like it was going to be as good as the place we remembered (I will admit the breakfast's aren't as creative as the last owners, but for just starting out as inn owners they are doing very well, and I expect to see improvements in this area as they ease into a routine). We will keep giving the Windward House our business, and recommend it to all our friends.

My wife and I stayed in the Coastal Gardens suite at the Windward and it was terrific. Dan & Matt made us a delicious breakfast every morning. The location of the Inn can't be beat. You're a short couple blocks right off Main street, perfect. The restaurants in Camden are insane, Long Grain, Fresh & Company, Francine, every meal was better than the last. I'd love to leave a crappy review so fewer people find out about this gem in Maine, but that would be selfish. Thanks Dan & Matt!!!
